History
Airbus launched the A380 to challenge the 747 at the top of the market, flying it first in 2005. Its full-length twin decks seat well over 500 passengers, but high operating costs and a shift toward efficient twins led Airbus to end production in 2021.
Variants
Only the -800 entered service; a stretched -900 and freighter were studied but never built.

In depth
The A380's sheer scale is the product of a market bet that turned out to be wrong, but the engineering behind it remains a marvel. Airbus reasoned that the world's biggest airports would grow ever more congested and that airlines would want to move the maximum number of passengers through a single, slot-constrained runway, so it built the largest passenger aircraft ever to enter service. To fit within the standard 80-metre airport gate box, the wingspan was capped just under that figure, which left the wing slightly larger in area than strictly needed for the -800 because it was designed with a heavier stretched version in mind that was never built. That is a spotter's clue in itself; the A380 wing looks generously proportioned even for its enormous fuselage because it was drawn for an aircraft bigger than the one that flies.
Building it was a continent-spanning logistical epic. Major sections are made across France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom, the wings famously built at Broughton in North Wales, and the pieces are too large for any normal transport, so they travel by specially widened roads, canal barges and a fleet of outsized Beluga and ship movements to the final assembly line at Toulouse. An early and costly setback came from the aircraft's hundreds of miles of wiring, when incompatible design software between the German and French sites meant the harnesses did not fit, delaying the whole programme by around two years and contributing to the enormous development cost that the modest sales never fully recovered.
In service the aircraft has been quietly excellent at what it does, if not at making money. Passengers consistently rate it the quietest and smoothest of the big jets, its bulk soaking up turbulence, and the twin full-length decks have allowed airlines to fit showers, bars and private suites at the front of the cabin. Emirates became the overwhelming operator, staking its entire hub strategy in Dubai on the type and flying by far the largest fleet, which is why the programme's fortunes rose and fell so closely with that single airline's orders. The decision to end production in 2021 came when it became clear that the market had shifted decisively toward efficient long-range twins like the Boeing 787 and Airbus's own A350, which could serve thinner routes point to point without needing to fill five hundred seats. In that sense its true rival was never the 747 it was built to beat, but the smaller twins that made the whole four-engine hub-and-spoke model look extravagant.
For the enthusiast in Britain, London Heathrow is one of the great A380 watching spots on the planet, with Emirates, British Airways, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Etihad, Korean Air and others bringing them in throughout the day; the Myrtle Avenue approach for the westerly runways and the various terminal viewing spots put you underneath a steady procession of them. British Airways bases its own small fleet there. A hard-won recognition tip: at a distance the surest way to tell an A380 from a 747 is the shape of the upper deck, which on the Airbus runs unbroken the full length of the fuselage and gives it a smooth, whale-like profile, whereas the 747's hump tapers away behind the wing. Watch the takeoff roll too, because for all its bulk the A380 rotates and climbs with a slow, almost stately deliberation, and its four big engines are noticeably quieter than an older jumbo's, a gentle rumble rather than a roar. The double row of main-gear wheels, twenty on the ground, is another giveaway to anyone watching it taxi.
