The BA609 is a civil tiltrotor combining helicopter-style vertical take-off with the speed and altitude of a turboprop by rotating wingtip proprotor nacelles between vertical and horizontal.

History
Bell and Agusta developed the aircraft to bring tiltrotor technology to the commercial market, and it first flew in 2003. The programme passed fully to AgustaWestland, later Leonardo, and was rebranded AW609 as development and certification stretched over many years. It remained in flight test long after its debut.
Variants
The core design is a nine-seat executive and utility tiltrotor, with proposed roles including offshore transport, search and rescue and emergency medical services. Different interior fits and mission equipment tailor it to those markets. Development iterations refined the proprotors, systems and pressurised cabin.
Where you'll see it
The type has no UK operational history and remained pre-production during the period covered, but it drew interest from offshore and rescue operators for its speed-plus-hover flexibility. Its long certification path delayed entry into revenue service. It stands as the first civil-oriented tiltrotor pursued to certification.
