History
De Havilland first flew the Mosquito in 1940 as a private venture, betting that a fast, unarmed wooden bomber could outrun fighters. The gamble paid off spectacularly, and the type served as bomber, night fighter, pathfinder, reconnaissance aircraft and precision strike platform. Its wooden construction eased production and saved strategic metals.
Variants
Dozens of marks covered bomber (B), fighter-bomber (FB), night-fighter (NF), photo-reconnaissance (PR) and trainer roles. The armed fighter versions had a solid gun nose, while bombers and PR aircraft carried a glazed nose.

Restored airworthy Mosquitoes are extremely rare, but the type is preserved in British museums including the de Havilland Aircraft Museum near London Colney, where the prototype is kept. Static and occasionally flying examples appear at major commemorative events.
In depth
The Mosquito's wooden construction was not simply a wartime expediency imposed by metal shortages — it was a deliberate design philosophy that de Havilland had refined across two decades of timber aircraft. The fuselage was an oval monocoque shell built in two halves from birch plywood sandwiching a balsa wood core, then bonded with casein glue and assembled around internal formers. This sandwich technique, precursor to modern composite structures, produced a fuselage stronger and lighter than an equivalent aluminium stressed-skin structure. The wing was similarly a solid wood structure with spruce spars and ply skins. The result was smooth aerodynamic surfaces that needed no rivets, rivets being a source of drag on all-metal contemporaries.
The Air Ministry was initially hostile to the concept. In 1939 the department formally rejected de Havilland's proposal for an unarmed, crew-of-two fast bomber on the grounds that no aircraft could survive in 1940 skies without defensive guns. Geoffrey de Havilland and his team pressed on with private funding, and when the prototype flew in November 1940 and reached 388 mph — faster than a Spitfire Mk I — the objections evaporated. The first operational mission was a photo-reconnaissance sortie over Brest on 20 September 1941, and the results silenced the remaining sceptics.
The type's most celebrated single operation was the 25 September 1942 low-level attack on the Gestapo headquarters in Oslo, Norway, carried out by four Mosquitoes of No. 105 Squadron at rooftop height to drop bombs through the building's front door during a Nazi ceremony. The timing was calculated so that prisoners in the basement would not be harmed while the ceremony above was disrupted — a precision that had never been attempted by any bomber previously. Similarly audacious was the February 1944 Amiens prison raid, in which Mosquitoes of 140 Wing breached the prison walls to allow French Resistance members to escape before execution.
No. 617 Squadron, famous for the Dams Raid, used Mosquitoes as low-level marking aircraft to guide Lancasters onto targets with the Oboe navigation system. The Pathfinder Force's Mosquito crews became the most prized navigators in Bomber Command: their ability to locate a target in cloud or darkness and drop a precisely placed target indicator was the difference between accurate area bombing and scattered tonnage. Their loss rate, despite flying without gunners, was lower than that of heavy bomber crews.
The German response to Mosquito intruder missions over their airfields included dedicated Me 262 jet interception flights, but the Mosquito was fast enough that even jet-age technology struggled to intercept it consistently in 1944 conditions. The PR Mosquito's ceiling of over 40,000 feet in later marks made it essentially immune to conventional interception for much of the war.
Production reached 7,781 aircraft across Britain, Canada and Australia. Because wooden airframes are vulnerable to humidity, delamination and insect infestation, far fewer Mosquitoes have survived than might be expected for such a numerous type. The de Havilland Aircraft Museum at London Colney in Hertfordshire holds the prototype, W4050, under cover. Only two Mosquitoes are currently airworthy worldwide: RS712, operated in Canada by the Reynolds-Alberta Museum (under restoration cycles), and the Aircraft Restoration Company's RR299 at Duxford, which last flew publicly in 2019 before grounding for major work. The Mosquito Aircraft Museum at London Colney holds several complete airframes. A full cockpit section forms part of the IWM Duxford's Land Warfare exhibition, offering one of the closest walk-up views accessible to visitors.
