History

Designed by Sydney Camm around the Rolls-Royce Merlin, the prototype first flew in November 1935 and entered RAF service in 1937. Its fabric-covered, tubular-steel structure was easy to build and repair, allowing rapid wartime production. Some 14,500 were built across British and Canadian factories.

Variants

The Mk I gave way to the cannon-armed Mk IIC and the ground-attack Mk IID with 40 mm guns. The Sea Hurricane served aboard carriers and catapult-equipped merchant ships. Later marks carried bombs and rockets in the fighter-bomber role.

A Hurricane flies with the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby and appears regularly at airshows across the UK. Airworthy and static examples are held at IWM Duxford, the RAF Museum and Brooklands. It remains an enduring symbol of 1940 in British public memory.

In depth

Sydney Camm's decision to retain a fabric-covered, tubular-steel fuselage structure for the Hurricane in 1934 — at a time when all-metal stressed-skin construction was already established practice — was both a pragmatic and a principled one. The RAF's network of repair facilities could patch canvas and weld steel; they had no tooling or skills for aluminium stressed-skin repair in the field. The Hurricane could be repaired by any good rigger with standard workshop equipment, and during the Battle of Britain this counted. An aircraft repaired in a forward dispersal tent in three hours was worth more to Fighter Command than a theoretically superior design waiting six weeks for factory work.

The Hurricane's combat record in 1940 needs careful quantification. In the Battle of Britain, the RAF's own analysis — conducted in the 1970s using German loss records rather than pilots' claims — attributed roughly 55 percent of Luftwaffe aircraft destroyed to Hurricanes and 42 percent to Spitfires, with the balance to other types and causes. This reflects deployment realities: there were more Hurricanes in frontline service than Spitfires, and Hurricane squadrons were typically assigned to attack the bomber formations while Spitfires engaged the fighter escorts at altitude. The Hurricane was by that stage marginally outperformed by the Bf 109E in level speed and rate of climb, but it was steady, it forgave rough handling, and it gave pilots time to aim.

In the Western Desert, Hurricanes equipped with 40 mm Vickers S guns under each wing — the Mk IID 'tank-buster' — were used against Rommel's armour from 1942. No. 6 Squadron, flying from Egypt and Libya, developed the technique of making low-level firing passes from slightly behind the beam of German and Italian tanks to present the thinner top armour. The Mk IID's cannon could penetrate the roof armour of most Axis medium tanks of the period, and the aircraft's stability under fire was considered essential for accurate gunnery at close range.

In the Far East, Hurricanes met the Zero and were consistently outmanoeuvred in turning engagements. The standard Eighth Army Air Force tactical advice was to fight above 20,000 feet where the Zero's performance degraded, an instruction easier to give than to execute against pilots who chose the terms of engagement. No. 232 Squadron lost nearly its entire strength over Singapore in February 1942.

The Sea Hurricane represents one of the more ingenious adaptations: the catapult-armed merchant (CAM) ship version, which could launch a Hurricane from a steam catapult mounted on a merchant ship's bow to intercept Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor maritime patrol bombers over the Atlantic. The pilot, having expended his ammunition, then had to ditch alongside a ship and hope to be picked up, as the aircraft had no deck-landing gear. The casualty rate was lower than expected, partly because Condor crews turned and fled when they saw a Hurricane launch rather than pressing home their attack on the convoy.

A total of 14,533 Hurricanes were built in Britain and Canada. Approximately 14 airworthy examples fly today, the majority in the UK. The BBMF Hurricane LF363 regularly leads Battle of Britain commemorations and is the most publicly visible of any type. The Shuttleworth Collection's Sea Hurricane at Old Warden is one of the few operational Sea Hurricane variants. The RAF Museum Hendon holds several marks under cover for close examination, including a complete Mk IIC with the four-cannon wing fitted. The Fighter Collection at Duxford usually maintains at least one flyable example, and several private owners base aircraft across East Anglia.
