History

Designed by Jiro Horikoshi and first flown in 1939, the Zero achieved its remarkable agility and reach by extreme weight-saving, at the cost of armour and self-sealing tanks. It outclassed Allied fighters in 1941-42 until new tactics and aircraft exposed its weaknesses. Nearly 11,000 were built.

Variants

The early A6M2 was followed by the clipped-wing A6M3 and the more powerful A6M5, the most-produced version. Float-equipped versions and trainers were also produced. Late-war variants gained limited armour as losses mounted.

Where you'll see it

The Zero was an Allied adversary rather than a UK type, opposing the Royal Navy and RAF in the Far East. Original airframes are extremely scarce; the few flyable examples worldwide occasionally tour, and UK enthusiasts encounter the type mainly through museum exhibits and air-show visits. In depth

The Zero's specification was drafted in 1937 by the Imperial Japanese Navy in close consultation with combat experience from the China Incident, where carrier pilots fought over distances their aircraft struggled to cover. The resulting Navy Type 96 carrier fighter requirement demanded a range of 1,200 nautical miles with drop tanks and a maximum speed exceeding 500 km/h — figures that experienced engineers at Nakajima considered impossible and declined to bid for. Mitsubishi designer Jiro Horikoshi accepted the contract and spent two years shaving weight from every component: the alloy used throughout the structure, called Extra Super Duralumin, was a secret Japanese metallurgical development with a superior strength-to-weight ratio. Control cables were lighter gauge than standard, cockpit armour was omitted entirely, and fuel tanks carried no self-sealing lining. The result weighed half as much as a contemporary European fighter of equivalent performance.

When the Zero entered combat over China in August 1940, Allied intelligence received reports that were internally doubted. The Claire L. Chennault-drafted analysis describing a highly manoeuvrable, long-range Japanese carrier fighter was filed and effectively ignored. The Pearl Harbor attack on 7 December 1941 and the simultaneous raids across the Pacific made the Zero's existence undeniable, but the shock of its performance — it outfought every Allied type it met in the first six months — was compounded by the absence of any recovery intelligence from crashed aircraft. The type's secrets remained partially intact until a Zero force-landed on Akutan Island, Alaska, on 4 June 1942 when its pilot, Tadayoshi Koga, was killed by the impact but the aircraft remained largely intact. US engineers shipped it to North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, repaired and tested it, and shared the results across all Pacific commands by late 1942. The resulting tactical advice — never turn fight a Zero, use diving attacks and zoom climbs, maintain speed — was already being applied instinctively by the better American pilots, but the confirmation gave it doctrinal weight.

Zero pilots included some of Japan's most accomplished aviators. Hiroyoshi Nishizawa, nicknamed 'The Devil,' scored at least 87 confirmed kills and was considered by his peers the most naturally gifted pilot in naval aviation — he died as a passenger in a transport aircraft in October 1944. Saburo Sakai, who scored 64 confirmed kills, survived being shot through the head over Guadalcanal in August 1942 with the loss of his right eye and returned to combat after surgery. Tetsuzo Iwamoto, with 80 confirmed kills, spent the war fighting primarily over the Solomon Islands and New Guinea.

The Zero's production total of approximately 10,939 was significant, but quality of construction and pilot experience declined sharply from 1943 onward as Japanese industrial capacity was strangled by Allied submarine warfare against raw material shipping. The A6M5, the most numerous variant, appeared in late 1943 with heavier wing skins and non-folding wingtips for better dive speed but no improvement in pilot protection or power.

Few original examples survive. The National Naval Aviation Museum at Pensacola, Florida, holds an airworthy A6M3 restored from the Aleutians and parts of other wrecks. The Planes of Fame at Chino, California, operates what is often described as the only flyable example in the world from original components, though its exact origin and configuration are subjects of ongoing specialist debate. In Japan, the Yushukan Museum at the Yasukuni Shrine holds a static A6M5. UK spotters seeking a close encounter should check the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, which holds aircraft associated with the Pacific war, though no Zero is permanently displayed there.
