The North American BT-9 was a basic trainer monoplane that served as the immediate predecessor to the famous T-6 Texan/Harvard family. It introduced the low-wing monoplane layout that would define American advanced training aircraft through World War II.

History
Developed in the mid-1930s to replace biplane trainers, the BT-9 entered service with the US Army Air Corps in 1937. It provided the foundation from which North American evolved the BC-1 and ultimately the iconic T-6 Texan. Hundreds were built and used extensively across American training commands.
Variants
Variants included the BT-9A, BT-9B, and BT-9C with progressive engine and equipment changes; the Yale was the export version for Canada and France.
