Recognition (WEFT)
| W — Wings | High-mounted, tapered |
|---|---|
| E — Engines | 1 × none, embedded-mounted |
| F — Fuselage | 7.11 m fuselage |
| T — Tail | Conventional |
WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.
Spot it by:
- All-wood shoulder-wing sailplane with a straight leading edge, constant-chord inner wing and taper outboard
- Small fences on the wing tips and Schempp-Hirth spoilers
- Fixed monowheel with nose and tail skids and a forward-sliding canopy
Look for a long-span wooden glider with a shoulder-mounted wing, tip fences and a straight-edged fin and deep rudder.
Specifications
- The Oberlerchner Mg 23 has a length of 7.11 m (23 ft).
- It has a wingspan of 16.4 m (54 ft).
- Its maximum speed is 180 km/h (112 mph).
- Typical crew: 1.

History
The prototype flew on 25 June 1955. Testing led to a larger fin and rudder and a modified canopy on the production Mg 23 SL, the first of which flew on 1 April 1962.
Variants
The Mg 23 prototype was built in a batch of eight and the Mg 23 SL was the production model, with 18 built.
Where you'll see it
A total of 26 were built before production ended in 1965. By mid-2010, 11 were on civil registers in Europe, and three were exported to the United States and one to Canada.
