History

First flown in 1940, the Mustang was originally built to a British requirement. Its early Allison engine disappointed at altitude until the British fitted the Rolls-Royce Merlin, creating a superb high-altitude fighter that could escort bombers deep into Germany. It became one of the most celebrated fighters of the war.

Variants

Early Allison-engined P-51 and A-36 attack versions gave way to the Merlin-powered P-51B and C, and then the definitive bubble-canopy P-51D. Post-war developments included the lightweight H model and the long-range twin-fuselage F-82 Twin Mustang.

In depth

The Mustang's origin is a story of wartime improvisation outpacing peacetime procurement. The British Purchasing Commission approached North American Aviation in April 1940 seeking a license-built Curtiss P-40. North American's president James Kindelberger declined and offered instead to design an entirely new aircraft in 120 days — an audacious promise that the company kept. The NA-73X prototype first flew on 26 October 1940, just 102 days after design work began, making it one of the fastest aircraft-to-flight programs in American aviation history. The laminar-flow wing that defines its aerodynamic character was jointly developed with the NACA, the precursor to NASA, and required manufacturing tolerances tighter than any previous production fighter: surface waviness was permitted to no more than 0.004 inches.

The Allison-engined early variants were genuinely excellent at low and medium altitude — the RAF used them for tactical reconnaissance — but supercharger limitations robbed performance above 15,000 feet. The transformation came when RAF test pilot Ronald Harker flew an early Mustang in April 1942 and noted that substituting a Merlin 61 would yield around 400 mph at altitude. Rolls-Royce installed a Merlin 65 in a modified airframe and the result exceeded all predictions. The USAAF took the idea, contracted Packard to build Merlins under license, and the P-51B entered production. When paired with 85-gallon drop tanks under each wing, it could escort B-17s and B-24s all the way to Berlin and back from bases in East Anglia — a capability that no earlier escort fighter had possessed.

The strategic consequence was profound. Eighth Air Force bombing losses had become unsustainable through late 1943; the October 1943 second Schweinfurt raid cost 77 of 291 attacking bombers. P-51D groups arriving in early 1944 were ordered by General Jimmy Doolittle to leave the bombers and hunt the Luftwaffe wherever it could be found. By spring 1944, Luftwaffe pilot training was being curtailed because fuel for instruction flights was running out and experienced instructors were being killed faster than they could be replaced.

Aces on the type include George Preddy, who scored 26.83 aerial victories — the highest total for any P-51 pilot — before being killed on Christmas Day 1944 by American anti-aircraft fire in the confusion over Liège. Francis Gabreski, the leading USAAF ace in Europe with 28 aerial victories, flew P-47s for most of his record but transitioned to P-51s before being shot down and captured in July 1944. Chuck Yeager, later the first man to break the sound barrier, flew Mustangs with the 357th Fighter Group.

Some 15,686 Mustangs of all variants were built. Surviving airworthy examples number roughly 170 globally, the largest warbird fleet of any single WWII type. In the UK, several are based at Duxford and a few appear at Flying Legends. In the United States, the Commemorative Air Force and private collectors operate dozens; the Planes of Fame at Chino, California, includes an original P-51A alongside multiple D-models. The most original wartime survivor is 'Glamorous Glen III,' preserved at the National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio — the actual aircraft in which Yeager scored most of his aerial victories. The P-51D's postwar career extended into Korea, where F-51Ds flew ground attack for the UN from 1950, and South Africa and Israel operated variants into the 1950s.
