The Piper Meridian transplants a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A turboprop into the PA-46 Malibu airframe, creating an affordable single-engine turboprop capable of flying at FL250 in pressurised comfort. It is the most popular single-engine turboprop in GA use.

Compared with the piston PA-46 Malibu/Mirage, the Meridian is identified by the Pratt & Whitney PT6A cowling — broader and with a distinct circular exhaust ring — versus the piston engine's smaller, slimmer cowl. The wing shape is identical across PA-46 variants, so engine identification is critical. Against the socata TBM series the Meridian has a somewhat fatter fuselage cross-section and a lower cruise speed.

History

Piper developed the Meridian as a turboprop-powered evolution of the piston Malibu/Mirage airframe, targeting owners wanting turbine reliability without the cost of a twin. The prototype flew in 1999 and certification came in 2000 with deliveries beginning the same year. Piper later evolved it into the M500 and M600 variants under the M-class branding.

Variants

The original PA-46-500TP Meridian used the PT6A-42A. The updated Piper M500 (introduced 2014) retained the same engine but added modern avionics. The Piper M600 stretched performance further with a PT6A-52.

Where you'll see it

The Meridian became the best-selling single-engine turboprop in its class during the 2000s, flown widely across the United States, Europe and Australia by owner-pilots and small charter operators. Its pressurised cabin and turbine engine made it attractive for high-altitude IFR cross-country work.
