Ryan AQM-91 Firefly

The Ryan AQM-91 Firefly was an American high-altitude reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle developed during the Cold War for deep penetration of denied airspace. It was designed to replace manned reconnaissance flights over hostile territory.

History
Developed under the secret 'Compass Arrow' programme, the AQM-91 first flew in 1968 and demonstrated the ability to operate at extreme altitudes. The programme was cancelled in 1971 before operational deployment, partly due to the emergence of satellite reconnaissance.
Variants
Only prototype/pre-production examples were built; no operational variant entered service.
