History
Members of the Mercury Model Airplane Club, including the Schweizer brothers, decided to build a primary glider after press coverage of 1928 gliding flights on Cape Cod. It first flew on 19 June 1930.
Variants
The SGP 1-1 has also been called the SGU 1-1. A replica of the original was built in 1989 by volunteers led by Ernst Schweizer.
Where you'll see it
It was the first of a line of 38 glider designs created by the Schweizers and the first of over 5,700 aircraft they built. The replica was made to celebrate 50 years of Schweizer sailplane construction.
