History

It was developed from the SGS 2-8 to meet a US Army Air Forces need to train glider pilots, and used a wooden wing to avoid the use of aluminium. Work began in the winter of 1941 to 1942.

Variants

The 2-12 had a wooden wing replacing the aluminium wing of the 2-8, and the wing was two feet greater in span. The wing was also moved from a mid to a low position to improve the instructor's visibility.

Where you'll see it

It was designed for the USAAF requirement to train glider pilots for air assault missions in the Second World War, and was designated TG-3.
