What is the actual difference between them?

The fundamental difference is mission: the Mi-24 Hind was designed as a flying infantry fighting vehicle — an assault helicopter that could transport eight soldiers while also providing its own fire support with a heavy weapons fit. Its large fuselage accommodates both the weapons systems up front and the troop compartment behind. The AH-64 Apache is a dedicated anti-armour and attack helicopter with no troop transport capacity whatsoever. Its tandem-seat cockpit, stub wings carrying Hellfire missiles and rocket pods, and 30 mm M230 chain gun are optimised purely for killing armoured vehicles and supporting ground forces. The Apache's Longbow millimetre-wave radar (on the AH-64D/E variants) allows it to detect and classify over 1,000 targets simultaneously and engage multiple targets in rapid succession, even in poor visibility. The Hind has no equivalent capability. The Apache is also significantly more agile — its lighter airframe and more powerful engine-to-weight ratio allow tighter manoeuvring. The Hind's size and troop-carrying capacity make it more versatile as a battlefield asset but less survivable in a contested anti-armour environment against a peer adversary.

In a direct engagement between the two aircraft, the Apache holds a significant advantage. Its Longbow radar and Hellfire L missiles give it a standoff engagement capability — it can detect, classify, and engage the Hind from beyond visual range, and the Hind has no equivalent radar or beyond-visual-range weapon to respond with. The Apache's AGM-114 Hellfire has a range of around 8 km; the Hind's main anti-armour weapon, the 9M114 Shturm (AT-6 Spiral), has a similar range, but the Hind must be visually on target and flying relatively straight during the engagement. The Apache can fire Hellfires from behind terrain features using the Longbow radar's masking capability. The Apache's greater manoeuvrability also helps in close-in combat. The Hind's one advantage is its defensive armament — its twin-barrel 12.7 mm machine gun or optional GSh-23 cannon, combined with genuine pilot skill — and its ability to absorb battle damage: the Hind was designed with titanium armour around the cockpit and critical systems. In Afghanistan, Hinds proved difficult to shoot down with small arms even under sustained ground fire. In a modern contested environment against Apache crews using current doctrine and equipment, the Apache wins clearly.

The Mi-24 Hind is substantially larger. Its fuselage length is 57.5 ft (17.5 m) against the Apache's 49.5 ft (15.1 m), and its maximum takeoff weight is around 26,455 lb (12,000 kg) versus the Apache's 23,000 lb (10,433 kg). The Hind is also faster: its maximum speed is 208 mph (335 km/h), while the Apache's is 182 mph (293 km/h) — a meaningful gap. The Hind's speed was a deliberate design choice: moving troops rapidly in and out of a hot landing zone required velocity. The Apache is primarily an American aircraft but has been widely exported: the UK operates AH-64Es (as the Apache AH2) as its primary attack helicopter, having replaced the earlier WAH-64; the Netherlands, Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, UAE, Greece, and India also operate the type. Israel has used it extensively in multiple conflicts and has contributed significantly to its development. The Mi-24 Hind was operated by virtually every Warsaw Pact nation and was widely exported to Soviet client states: Afghanistan, Angola, Ethiopia, Libya, Nicaragua, Vietnam, and dozens of others. It saw extensive combat in Afghanistan with Soviet forces (1979–89), in multiple African conflicts, in the Iran-Iraq War (Iraq operated Hinds), and most recently in Ukraine, where both Russian Mi-24s and Ukrainian Mi-24s have been used simultaneously. Which came first, and why does that matter?

The Mi-24 flew first, in September 1969, against the Apache's September 1975 — a gap of six years. The Hind entered Soviet service in 1972 and was a major shock to NATO planners when its capabilities became known. NATO's Central European defence doctrine in the 1970s assumed the Soviet Union would use massive armoured thrusts supported by helicopters; the Hind's combination of firepower and troop transport gave the concept a terrifying embodiment. The US Army's requirement for a dedicated attack helicopter — which became the Apache — was partly driven by the recognition that the existing Cobra was inadequate against the threat the Hind represented in the anti-armour role. The Apache's development incorporated lessons from Vietnam and was deliberately designed around the NATO anti-armour mission. The Hind's early operational use in Angola and Ethiopia (from 1977) and then Afghanistan (from 1979) provided real-world combat data that shaped later Mi-24 variants and informed Western analysis of the type's strengths and weaknesses.

Which will a spotter actually see?

The Apache is more commonly seen at Western airshows and military open days. UK AH-64E Apaches appear at RNAS Yeovilton Air Day and occasionally at other major UK shows; US Army and USAF Apaches can be seen at airshows across the United States. The Hind is a rarer sight in the West but not unknown — several privately owned examples are airworthy in the United States and Europe, and they draw large crowds when displayed. The Hind's sheer visual impact — its bulk, its stub wings, its distinctive tandem cockpit — makes it one of the most dramatic helicopters to see in the air. Statically, both types can be found at military museums: the Army Aviation Museum at Fort Novosel (formerly Fort Rucker), Alabama, has multiple Apache variants; the RAF Museum at Hendon has a WAH-64 Apache.
