History
Mil's Mi-24 first flew in 1969 and entered Soviet service in the early 1970s, becoming famous in Afghanistan as a fast, heavily armoured assault helicopter. Its stub wings carry rockets and missiles while the cabin can lift a squad of troops.
Variants
Early steel-canopy Hind-A models gave way to the definitive tandem-bubble Hind-D/E, with the export Mi-35 line continuing in production and upgrade.

In depth
The Hind's design philosophy represented a deliberate break with the attack helicopter as conceived in the West. Where the US Army's Cheyenne and later Apache programmes sought a pure attack platform — no passengers, minimum weight, maximum weapons — Mikhail Mil's design team proposed a 'flying infantry fighting vehicle'. The argument was doctrinal: an attack helicopter that could escort its own assault troops into a landing zone, suppress the perimeter with its own weapons, and then land its own eight-man squad did not require separate lift helicopters. The helicopter company would be self-contained.
The Mi-24's stub wings are not merely hardpoint carriers. At cruise speed they generate roughly one-quarter of the aircraft's lift, reducing the load on the main rotor and allowing a cruise speed of 295 km/h that no pure attack helicopter of the same period approached. The wings are mounted with seven degrees of anhedral (drooped downward) to improve low-speed stability and to position the weapon hardpoints away from the rotor downwash, which would otherwise disturb rockets and missiles during the release sequence. Each wing carries three hardpoints; a typical Hind-D fit might carry four UV-57 57 mm rocket pods and four 9M17 Falanga (AT-2 Swatter) wire-guided anti-tank missiles.
Afghanistan was the crucible of the Hind's combat identity and also the source of its limitations. Soviet forces deployed Mi-24s from the first days of the 1979 intervention, and by the mid-1980s the type dominated Soviet helicopter operations. In the early years the Hind was essentially immune to ground fire — its titanium rotor head and engine cowlings could absorb heavy machine-gun rounds, and its windscreen was rated to stop 12.7 mm rounds. The situation changed in September 1986 when CIA-supplied FIM-92 Stinger shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles were first used by Mujahideen fighters. The first Stinger engagement on 26 September 1986, near Jalalabad, brought down three Mi-24s. Over the following two years, Stingers destroyed an estimated 270 Soviet aircraft and forced a fundamental change in tactics: Hinds began flying at higher altitudes, negating the close-support role they had been built for.
The Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988) produced the only confirmed Mi-24 versus Mi-24 engagements in history. Iraq operated Soviet-supplied Mi-24Ds; Iran operated Mi-24s captured or purchased through back channels. Engagements between these aircraft were rare and tactically inconclusive — both sides used the Hind primarily against ground targets and armoured columns rather than in aerial combat. Iraqi Mi-24s attacked Iranian ground forces in multiple major offensives including the Battle of Majnoon Island (1984), supporting armour with rocket and gun fire at close range across the marshlands where tanks could not operate.
The Hind's closest direct competitor in concept — the 'flying IFV' — has no direct Western equivalent. The Bell AH-1 Cobra that served alongside it conceptually carried no troops; the AH-64 Apache similarly has no troop compartment. The Russian concept of a gunship-transport was not replicated in the West, arguably because Western air assault doctrine allocated separate assets to the escort and lift roles. The Mi-24's successor, the Mi-28 Havoc, abandoned the troop cabin entirely and moved to a pure-attack configuration, implicitly conceding the point to Western doctrine. The Ka-52 Alligator that now accompanies Mi-24s in Russian service is a side-by-side coaxial-rotor design with no cabin at all.
For UK spotters, Mi-24s are extremely rare in British skies. A handful of privately registered Mi-24s have appeared at UK airshows — the most notable being the pair operated by the Hind Experience display company, which flew civilian-registered Mi-35P Hinds at British events during the 2010s. Museum examples are held at the RAF Museum Cosford and at the Army Flying Museum at Middle Wallop. RIAT Fairford occasionally hosts a Ukrainian or Czech Mi-24/35 as a visiting military display aircraft. A recognition detail worth memorising: the Mi-24D and later marks use a stepped, side-by-side arrangement in the forward cockpit area, but the gunner sits in the front position and the pilot above and behind — the opposite arrangement to the AH-64, where the gunner is forward and the pilot above and aft, and the same as the Mi-28. This matters for identification in photographs because the cockpit step rises toward the rear on the Hind, where on the Apache the higher seat is at the rear but the step ascends toward the front.
