The B-2 Spirit and B-52 Stratofortress are the two most distinctive aircraft in the United States Air Force's strategic bomber fleet — and the most extreme contrast within it. One is a Cold War relic that refuses to die; the other is the world's only operational stealth bomber. Both are flying today, and the Air Force intends to fly both into the 2040s.

The B-52 is a conventional strategic bomber: eight turbofan engines mounted in four underwing pods, a large conventional fuselage with a crew of five, and the ability to carry enormous quantities of conventional or nuclear ordnance over intercontinental ranges. It is large, relatively slow, and has been continuously upgraded since its 1952 introduction — the current B-52H variants are flying with new Rolls-Royce F130 engines being fitted under the Commercial Engine Replacement Program, ensuring the airframe will likely reach 100 years of service by the 2050s. The B-2 is a flying wing stealth aircraft: no conventional fuselage or tail, a crew of two, and a radar cross-section of approximately 0.1 square metres — comparable to a large bird on radar. Its entire external shape is optimised to deflect radar energy away from the receiver, and its exhaust nozzles are buried within the wing to minimise infrared signature. The B-2 carries its weapons internally to avoid radar reflectivity. It costs approximately $2.1 billion per aircraft (in 2024 dollars); only 21 were built, of which 20 remain. The B-52 has no meaningful stealth capability, but its age-related maintenance burden has made it, counterintuitively, cheaper to operate than the B-2 over the long term.
This question has no straightforward answer because the two aircraft are not designed to fight each other and operate in entirely different ways. In a conventional air-to-air scenario, neither aircraft is a fighter, and both would rely on escort fighters for protection. The B-52, however, would be extremely vulnerable to any modern air defence system without stealth; the B-2 can theoretically penetrate the most advanced integrated air defence systems in the world undetected. The relevant operational comparison is penetration: the B-52 is a standoff platform in any contested environment, launching cruise missiles from outside enemy air defences. The B-2 is designed to fly directly into denied airspace — including targets defended by S-400 and S-500 systems — deliver precision-guided bombs, and exit undetected. In the 2003 Iraq War, B-2s flew 34-hour round trips from Whiteman AFB, Missouri, to strike high-priority targets in the first hours of the conflict. The B-52 could not have performed those missions. Against peer adversaries with modern radar and missile systems, the B-52 without escort and standoff weapons is not survivable; the B-2's survivability is classified but is understood to be the highest of any current USAF aircraft.
The B-52 is larger. Its wingspan is 185 ft (56.4 m) against the B-2's 172 ft (52.4 m), and its maximum takeoff weight of 488,000 lb (221,350 kg) exceeds the B-2's 376,000 lb (170,600 kg). The B-52 is also faster at maximum speed: approximately 650 mph (1,047 km/h) versus the B-2's 628 mph (1,010 km/h) — though both aircraft cruise at subsonic speeds in normal operations. The B-52's payload capacity is larger: it can carry up to 70,000 lb (31,751 kg) of mixed ordnance; the B-2 carries up to 40,000 lb (18,144 kg) internally. The B-2's internal carriage is a significant constraint — stealth requires that nothing hangs externally — but means every weapon it carries is integrated and precision-guided. The B-52's external pylons and rotary launchers give it enormous flexibility in weapons loading. Range is broadly similar: both aircraft have intercontinental unrefuelled range and effectively unlimited range with aerial refuelling.
Both aircraft are exclusively American. The B-52 has never been exported and remains solely a USAF asset. The 76 operational B-52Hs are based at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, and Minot AFB, North Dakota, with forward deployments to Diego Garcia, Andersen AFB (Guam), and occasionally UK bases. The B-2 is similarly exclusive — all 20 operational aircraft are based at Whiteman AFB, Missouri, with no export customers and no foreign operation of the type. Both aircraft are nuclear-capable and are part of the US strategic nuclear triad, which requires them to remain under strict American control. The B-21 Raider, the B-2's intended successor, is now in testing at Edwards AFB and will be the only stealth bomber type the USAF needs when the B-2 retires.
The B-52 flew first — its prototype flew in April 1952, and it entered SAC service in 1955. The B-2's prototype flew in July 1989 — 37 years later. The B-52 was designed to deliver nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union by flying at high altitude over defended territory. The introduction of Soviet surface-to-air missiles (exemplified by the U-2 shootdown in 1960) immediately made high-altitude penetration suicidal and required a fundamental rethink of how the B-52 would be used — it pivoted to low-level penetration missions, which proved structurally punishing. The B-2 was developed under the Advanced Technology Bomber programme, initiated after it became clear that low-level B-52 missions were increasingly vulnerable to Soviet air defences. The B-2's stealth was the answer to the question the B-52's growing vulnerability posed. Ironically, the B-2's extremely high cost per aircraft — partly a consequence of classified development in the 1980s — led to its production being cut from 132 planned aircraft to 21, leaving the B-52 as the backbone of the conventional bombing force by sheer numbers. The B-52's longevity is a tribute to the adaptability of its basic design; no aircraft in history has been in continuous front-line service for as long.
The B-52 is more accessible. Whiteman AFB and Barksdale AFB occasionally hold open days where B-52s can be seen on the ramp. B-52s appear at airshows — including EAA AirVenture Oshkosh — and their distinctive eight-engine silhouette is recognisable at long range. USAF Heritage Flights at major airshows sometimes feature B-52s flying alongside WWII and Cold War aircraft. Static B-52s are preserved at numerous air force base museums and civilian aviation museums across the United States. The B-2 is far rarer at public events. All operational B-2s are based at Whiteman AFB, which does not have regular public open days. The aircraft does appear at major airshows — typically Oshkosh and Farnborough in alternating years — but only briefly, in a fly-by rather than static display. A static B-2 can be seen at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio, which has a non-operational example on permanent display. Seeing one in flight is an event; the flying wing silhouette from below is unlike any other aircraft.
