History

Boeing designed the B-52 in the late 1940s as a long-range nuclear deterrent, the prototype flying in 1952 and the type entering Strategic Air Command service in 1955. Successive re-engining and avionics upgrades have kept it relevant through Vietnam, the Gulf and beyond, and the surviving B-52H fleet is being re-engined again as the B-52J.

Variants

Early A through G models gave way to the definitive B-52H, the only version still flying, distinguished by its turbofan engines and shorter tail fin. Conventional and stand-off cruise-missile roles have been added over the decades.

In depth

The B-52's silhouette is a snapshot of a design decision made almost overnight. As legend and Boeing history both record, the swept-wing, eight-engine layout was sketched over a single weekend in a Dayton hotel room in 1948 by a team led by Ed Wells and George Schairer, who built a balsa model to sell the concept on Monday morning. What they drew has proved almost absurdly durable. The wing is deliberately thin and flexible, flexing several feet at the tip and drooping so far on the ground that the outrigger wheels near the tips exist to stop it scraping the tarmac; in flight the whole span lifts and the aircraft seems to hang from its own wings. That flex is a feature, letting the structure ride out gusts that would fatigue a stiffer design, which is a large part of why airframes built in the early 1960s are still flying.

The undercarriage hides another clever trick. The B-52 sits on a quadricycle main gear of four twin-wheel trucks, and the two forward trucks can be steered, or crabbed, so that the aircraft can land with its nose pointed off to one side into a crosswind while the wheels roll straight down the runway. Watch a Stratofortress land in a stiff breeze and you will see the fuselage visibly angled across the centreline, a disconcerting sight the first time. The tall single fin of the H model is noticeably shorter than the towering fins of earlier variants, a change made when engineers found the big tail unnecessary and a liability in low-level flight.

Combat history has kept pace with the airframe's longevity. In Vietnam the type carpet-bombed from altitude in the Arc Light raids and, during the December 1972 Linebacker II campaign, flew through the heaviest surface-to-air missile defences of the war, losing a number of aircraft over Hanoi in some of the most intense bomber operations since the Second World War. In 1991 B-52s opened Desert Storm with a record-setting mission from Barksdale in Louisiana, launching cruise missiles at Iraqi targets and returning home in a single thirty-five-hour sortie. Since then they have served over the Balkans, Afghanistan and Iraq, latterly as stand-off cruise-missile trucks and precision bombers rather than the low-level nuclear penetrators they were rebuilt to be in the 1960s.

Its Cold War rivals within the American fleet, the supersonic B-58 Hustler and the swing-wing B-1, have long since retired or dwindled, and the exotic B-2 flies only in tiny numbers, yet the plain, honest B-52 endures because it is cheap to operate and endlessly adaptable. The current re-engining to B-52J standard, swapping the eight elderly engines for modern commercial turbofans and fitting a new radar, is intended to keep the type serving alongside the B-21 into the 2050s, meaning some airframes may fly for a century.

For the British enthusiast, RAF Fairford is once again the place to be, the regular European operating base for Bomber Task Force rotations where two or three B-52s at a time draw photographers to the Gloucestershire hedgerows. They have been near-fixtures at the Royal International Air Tattoo, sometimes performing a slow, thunderous flypast with the wings visibly flexing. A hard-won spotting tip: from the ground the eight-jet exhaust smoke of the older engines has long been a giveaway on takeoff, a dirty grey trail no other bomber leaves, though the coming re-engining will eventually clean that signature up. Look, too, at the nose, where a pair of blister fairings under the chin house the targeting and electro-optical sensors, a small modern detail bolted onto a genuinely ancient shape.
