What is the actual difference between them?

The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine, fly-by-wire multirole fighter designed by General Dynamics from the Lightweight Fighter programme of the early 1970s. It prioritises sustained turn performance, long range, and a sophisticated avionics suite that has been upgraded continuously for 50 years. The MiG-29 Fulcrum is a twin-engine Soviet point-defence interceptor built around raw agility at short range — specifically to counter NATO jets near Warsaw Pact airspace. Its Klimov RD-33 engines give it superb thrust for rapid climbs, but the early variants had a combat radius of only about 700 km, roughly half the F-16's. Avionics in Soviet-era MiG-29s lagged significantly: the RLPK-29 radar had limited look-down/shoot-down capability and poor ECCM compared with the AN/APG-68 carried by later F-16C/D blocks. The F-16 uses a side-stick controller and a reclined seat to help pilots sustain high-g manoeuvres; the MiG-29 relies on a conventional centre-stick but pairs it with a helmet-mounted sight and the R-73 (AA-11 Archer) off-boresight missile, giving it a short-range snap-shot capability that initially shocked NATO analysts. Real-world outcomes — Israeli pilots over Syria, German Luftwaffe evaluation flights in the 1990s, and the 2022 Ukraine war — consistently show that BVR radar and missile quality dominate the result. Deliveries to Ukraine began in 2024. The MiG-29 operates with Russia, India (being phased out), Ukraine (in active combat as of 2022–2024), Poland (transferred to Ukraine), Slovakia (transferred to Ukraine), Hungary (retired), Germany (retired after reunification trials), Belarus, Serbia, Algeria, Bangladesh, Cuba, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Myanmar, Peru, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.

Which came first, and why does that matter?

The F-16 first flew on 20 January 1974 (YF-16 prototype) and entered USAF service in 1978. The MiG-29 first flew on 6 October 1977 and entered Soviet service in 1983. The F-16 is therefore older as a programme, having been designed from the outset for export and long-term upgrades. This matters enormously: the F-16's modular avionics bay and continued US government investment mean that 2024-standard Block 70/72 F-16Vs carry an AESA radar (AN/APG-83), advanced EW systems, and JHMCS II — effectively a new aircraft in an old airframe. The MiG-29's upgrade path was fragmented by the Soviet collapse, leaving most exported airframes in mid-1980s configuration. Aircraft that look similar on a silhouette chart may be separated by 40 years of avionics evolution.

Which will a spotter actually see?

The F-16 is an extremely common sight across NATO airshows — USAF Thunderbirds demo team, Dutch and Belgian display teams, and dozens of national air forces regularly participate in European airshows. It flies from bases across Europe (Aviano, Spangdahlem/moving, Leeuwarden, Kleine-Brogel) and is present at almost every major airshow including RIAT, Farnborough, and Kleine-Brogel's Open Day. The MiG-29 is now much harder to see in the West: German and Polish MiG-29s that used to appear at airshows have been transferred or retired. Serbian and Algerian MiG-29s do occasionally display. Russia's Strizhi (Swifts) aerobatic team flew MiG-29s at international shows before 2022 sanctions; they no longer participate in Western events. The most likely Western sightings are now Polish or Slovak MiG-29s before their retirement, or preserved examples in museums like the RAF Museum Cosford.
