History
Born from the US Air Force's Lightweight Fighter programme, the F-16 first flew in 1974 and pioneered fly-by-wire controls and a reclined ejection seat. It became one of the most widely produced jet fighters in history, with thousands built. Continuous upgrades have kept it competitive for decades.
Variants
Block designations from the F-16A/B through the F-16C/D to the modern F-16V Viper mark its evolution. Two-seat versions serve as trainers and dedicated mission aircraft. Many nations license-built or assembled their own fleets.

The RAF never adopted the F-16, but US Air Force Falcons regularly deploy to and exercise from UK bases such as RAF Lakenheath. The type is a crowd favourite at RIAT Fairford, often flown by European demonstration teams. Its distinctive sound and agility make it a UK airshow staple.
In depth
The F-16 was born from a heretical idea in the early 1970s: that the United States Air Force had been building its fighters too big, too heavy and too expensive, and that a lighter, simpler, strictly visual-range dogfighter could be built for less than half the cost. The Lightweight Fighter programme pitted General Dynamics' YF-16 against Northrop's YF-17 in a fly-off that General Dynamics won in 1975. What the military then did with that winner is almost the opposite of what the programme intended — successive requirements and upgrades grew the F-16 into a multirole aircraft with radar, beyond-visual-range missiles, precision ground attack and eventually conformal fuel tanks that would have appalled the programme's original advocates. The one thing that survived intact from the original philosophy was the pilot interface: the reclined seat at thirty degrees to manage g-tolerance, the side-stick controller on the right console, and the bubble canopy giving near-360-degree visibility with no bow frame at the front to obstruct the pilot's sight line.
The Fighting Falcon holds one of the most extensive combat records of any Western jet. Israeli F-16s destroyed the Iraqi Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981 in a mission that required flying at low level across Jordan and Iraq and back, with fuel margins so tight that pilots' personal notes on timing and power settings were critical. In the 1982 Lebanon air war, Israeli F-16s claimed dozens of Syrian MiG-21s and MiG-23s in the Bekaa Valley — engagements that confirmed the type's dogfighting credentials against aircraft from the same generation. Pakistan Air Force F-16s shot down multiple Soviet and Afghan aircraft during the 1980s. US Air Force F-16s flew extensively in both Gulf Wars, Bosnia and Kosovo, and later transitioned to close air support roles in Afghanistan and Iraq that accumulated enormous total flying hours.
Compared with the MiG-29, its most direct Soviet-era counterpart, the F-16 is somewhat slower in initial acceleration but has consistently shown better sustained turn performance in exercises. German Luftwaffe pilots flying inherited East German MiG-29s regularly bested F-16s in 1990s wargames specifically because of the Fulcrum's helmet-mounted sight and short-range infrared missiles — a capability gap that accelerated Western procurement of similar systems. Against the Eurofighter Typhoon, the F-16 is outclassed aerodynamically in most configurations, but the F-16V Viper with modern avionics and APG-83 AESA radar remains a formidable system, and its considerably lower operating cost makes it the preferred choice for nations where budget constrains ambition.
USAFE F-16s at Aviano Air Base in Italy and Spangdahlem in Germany are the easiest European examples to access. In the UK, the primary opportunity is RIAT Fairford, where multiple nations' F-16s regularly appear: Dutch, Belgian, Danish, Norwegian, Greek, Polish and Portuguese aircraft have all appeared there, and the USAF Thunderbirds aerobatic team flies F-16Cs. Soesterberg Air Base Museum in the Netherlands holds a collection of Dutch examples. The National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio has multiple F-16 variants on permanent display.
The spotter detail that separates an expert from a casual observer: the F-16 was the first production fighter to use a digital fly-by-wire control system that is inherently unstable in pitch, meaning the aircraft would immediately depart controlled flight without constant computer correction. This allows tighter turns than a stable aircraft could achieve. On Block 50 and later jets, a small blister under the nose houses the LANTIRN or Sniper targeting pod interface, and the 360-degree bubble canopy — unmistakable from any angle — remains the fastest single-feature identification cue. The absence of any forward canopy frame is completely unique among fighters of its era and still unusual today.
