The F-15 Eagle was designed by McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) specifically for air superiority, entering service in 1976. The F-15 first flew in July 1972; the F-16 first flew in January 1974. The F-15 entered service in 1976, the F-16 in 1978. They were designed in tandem as a conscious high-low mix — a lesson from Vietnam where expensive F-4 Phantoms were the only fighters available regardless of mission type. The pairing concept worked: the F-15 has an unmatched air-to-air combat record (100+ kills, zero losses), and the F-16 became the most numerous Western fighter ever built (over 4,600 delivered). The timeline matters because both have been upgraded far beyond their original specifications — the F-15EX Eagle II (first flight 2021) and F-16V Block 70/72 are essentially new aircraft in familiar airframes.
Both are common airshow performers.
