History

The F-15 was conceived in the late 1960s as a dedicated air-superiority fighter to counter Soviet types, and first flew on 27 July 1972. It entered service in 1976 and has been continually developed, with new-build F-15EX Eagle II airframes still rolling off the line decades later.

Variants

Early single-seat F-15A and two-seat F-15B air-superiority models were followed by the improved F-15C and F-15D. The dual-role F-15E Strike Eagle added a deep-strike capability and underpins export Eagles such as the F-15I, F-15K, F-15SA and the latest F-15EX.

Where you'll see it

The F-15 has never served with the RAF, but it is a long-standing fixture in British skies through the United States Air Forces in Europe, with F-15E Strike Eagles based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk. Lakenheath Eagles are frequent participants at the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford and a familiar sight over East Anglia.

In depth

The F-15's design philosophy was shaped by a specific lesson drawn from air battles over Vietnam: American pilots were losing engagements they should have won because their aircraft, optimised for beyond-visual-range missile combat, turned out to be badly outclassed in the close-in dogfight when those missiles failed or rules of engagement prohibited their use. The losing aircraft was often the F-4 Phantom, a powerful jet originally designed without a gun on the assumption that future air combat would be purely missile-based. The McDonnell Douglas design team was given a clear mandate: build an aircraft with a thrust-to-weight ratio greater than one at combat weight, a wing loading low enough for sustained turning, and a 20mm gun as standard equipment. The resulting aircraft had a wing area of 56 square metres — almost as large as the entire flying surface of a Spitfire — and two Pratt & Whitney F100 engines that collectively produced more thrust than the aircraft weighed when lightly loaded.

The F-15's air-to-air kill record stands at over 100 kills and zero air-to-air losses — a figure unmatched by any other fighter in the jet age. The bulk of these kills were achieved by Israeli and Saudi Arabian F-15s: Israeli Air Force F-15s destroyed Syrian aircraft over Lebanon in 1982 in numbers that remain staggering, with over 40 kills in a single afternoon's fighting during the Bekaa Valley engagements, the combination of superior training, advanced missiles and the F-15's radar range advantage proving decisive against MiG-21 and MiG-23 opponents. US Air Force F-15Cs scored the majority of American air-to-air kills during the 1991 Gulf War, including the only air-to-air kills by US aircraft since Vietnam. The Strike Eagle variant compounded this record with enormous strike tonnage over Iraq and Afghanistan through two decades of operations.

Comparisons with the Su-27 Flanker, designed specifically to counter the Eagle, are the most analytically interesting. The Su-27 is broadly comparable in size and thrust and superior in instantaneous turn rate at low speed due to its relaxed static stability. In sustained turn performance at medium altitude, analyses diverge by source. In the one documented exercise involving both types — Indian Air Force exercises in the 1990s using borrowed Russian Su-27s — results were closely contested and varied by engagement altitude, with no decisive advantage emerging for either type in a neutral evaluation. The later F-15C with AESA radar and AIM-120D missile enjoys a significant beyond-visual-range advantage over legacy Su-27s; the Su-35 with its IRBIS-E radar closes that gap meaningfully.

For UK-based spotters, RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk is the primary destination. The 48th Fighter Wing has operated F-15Es there since 1992, and the base conducts a proportion of its flying as formation departures and recoveries visible from the A1065 road that runs alongside the perimeter. The nearby village of Lakenheath and the road toward Brandon both provide legal spotting positions. Lakenheath's occasional air shows allow airside access. RIAT Fairford is the second major venue, where Lakenheath's Strike Eagles typically participate as static and sometimes flying displays. The National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB holds F-15 variants in its development hangar.

The spotter detail that most rewards a second look at any F-15: the FAST Pack conformal fuel tanks, when fitted, change the aircraft's silhouette dramatically. These rectangular tanks clip directly onto the fuselage sides running from behind the cockpit to the engine exhausts, adding both fuel volume and weapons pylons without the drag penalty of conventional underwing tanks. An F-15E with conformal tanks and a full load of GBU-28 penetrator bombs is almost unrecognisably bulkier than the clean air-superiority F-15C. Conformal tanks cannot be jettisoned in flight, meaning an aircraft carrying them is committed to that configuration for the sortie — which is why the same airframe presents such different visual weights on different days at Lakenheath, depending on what the mission requires.
