What is the actual difference between them?

The F-22 is a twin-engine, twin-tail air-dominance fighter with a strong emphasis on all-aspect stealth and supercruise. The J-20 (Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon) is a twin-engine, canard-delta fighter that entered service with the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) in 2017. Its design is distinctive: large delta wing, canard foreplanes, and a chined nose reminiscent of the YF-23 and F-22 combined. The canards improve low-speed agility but create radar reflection challenges — most Western analysts assess the J-20's stealth as optimised for the frontal hemisphere and less comprehensive on sides and rear than the F-22. The J-20's most significant advantage on paper is size: it is considerably larger than the F-22, with longer weapon bays that can carry the PL-15 extended-range AAM (estimated range 200+ km) and possibly the PL-21 ultra-long-range missile. Early J-20s used Russian AL-31F engines (not ideal for stealth due to visible turbine stages); later variants are transitioning to the indigenous WS-10C and eventually the WS-15, which is expected to enable supercruise. China has been deliberately opaque about production numbers; estimates range from 150 to 200+ airframes as of 2025, meaning the PLAAF may already fly more J-20s than the USAF flies F-22s.

The J-20's WS-10C engines do not yet match the F119's thrust-to-weight ratio; the WS-15 when mature is designed to equal or exceed F119 performance. The J-20 carries the PL-15 (estimated 200+ km range, active seeker) versus the F-22's AIM-120D (estimated 180+ km range) — on paper the PL-15 has a range edge. Both aircraft have AESA radars. The J-20 lacks thrust-vectoring in production variants, which is a close-in manoeuvring disadvantage relative to the F-22. However, the J-20's size and weapon bay volume give it a potential BVR salvo depth advantage. Any real engagement would be mediated by AWACS support, datalinks, and the electronic warfare environment over the Taiwan Strait or South China Sea — parameters that are classified on both sides. Which came first, and why does that matter?

The F-22 prototype flew in 1990 and entered service in 2005. The J-20 prototype (2001) first flew in January 2011; it entered PLAAF service in 2017. The J-20 entered service 12 years after the F-22, but with more modern avionics architecture. Critically, the J-20 was designed with knowledge of what the F-22 looked like and what its capabilities reportedly were — it could target known weaknesses. The production gap is closing: F-22 production ended at 187 aircraft in 2011; J-20 production is ongoing and the fleet likely surpassed F-22 numbers around 2023–2024. Which will a spotter actually see?

The F-22 is accessible at US air bases and airshows. The J-20 is essentially inaccessible for Western spotters in normal circumstances. It has appeared at Zhuhai Airshow (China) on several occasions — 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022 — which is the primary legitimate opportunity for outside observers. It is based at PLAAF facilities not open to public access. No international deployments outside China have been reported. For Chinese aviation enthusiasts, the Zhuhai show and occasional base perimeter sightings are the realistic options.
