History

The J-20 first flew in January 2011 and entered People's Liberation Army Air Force service in 2017. It pairs a stealthy faceted airframe with a canard-delta layout, and progressively swapped imported engines for indigenous WS-10 and later WS-15 powerplants.

Variants

Versions include the initial production J-20, the WS-10-powered J-20A and a two-seat J-20S derivative.

In depth

The J-20's design was a deliberate statement that China had absorbed a specific lesson from studying American stealth programmes: the most tactically important aspect of stealth is not being invisible to all radar at all ranges, but being invisible to fire control radar at engagement range. The aircraft's frontal stealth shaping — the faceted chined nose, the diverterless supersonic inlets, the internal weapons bays — is carefully optimised for the forward quarter, where engagement radars typically look. The canard-delta planform, which provides excellent lift-to-drag at cruise speed and strong high-alpha performance, was chosen over a pure tailless delta because the canards allow a larger, heavier airframe to remain agile. The decision means the J-20 is not stealthy from all aspects — canards produce significant radar reflections from the side — but that trade-off reflects a deliberate prioritisation of first-shot, beyond-visual-range engagement over close-in dogfighting survivability.

The J-20 carries an internal load that includes PL-15 beyond-visual-range missiles in the main bay and PL-10 short-range missiles in narrow side bays — a weapons mix that mirrors the F-22's configuration philosophically if not technically. The PL-15, with a ramjet motor giving it a range reportedly comparable to or exceeding the AIM-120D AMRAAM, is the weapon the J-20 was built to deploy from stealth. Compared with the F-22, the J-20 is longer and appears to have a greater fuel fraction, suggesting it was designed for range as well as lethality — a strategic reach suited to the Pacific theatre, where engagement distances are vast and contested airspace is far from Chinese mainland bases.

Against the F-35, which is the Western aircraft it is most likely to encounter in a Taiwan scenario, analysts note that the J-20's sensor suite maturity remains difficult to assess from outside, while the F-35's distributed aperture system and datalink architecture represent a known and high benchmark. The Su-57 occupies a different design space; the two aircraft reflect different national priorities rather than different solutions to the same problem, and there is no operational context in which they would be compared directly.

Access to the J-20 for Western enthusiasts is genuinely difficult. The Zhuhai Airshow, held every two years in November in Guangdong province, is the only venue where J-20s have performed public flying displays — beginning in 2016 with a brief flyover and expanding to more complete sequences in later editions. Foreign nationals can attend Zhuhai with appropriate arrangements, and aviation enthusiasts have done so. No J-20 is preserved in any publicly accessible location outside China, and official imagery remains the most detailed photographic record available to most observers.

The spotter detail that is most diagnostic at distance is the nose profile. The J-20 has a dramatically elongated, pointed nose that is longer relative to body length than any other operational fighter — longer even than the YF-23 prototype. In side view, the nose droops very slightly forward of the cockpit, a shape that accommodates a large-aperture nose-mounted AESA radar and also contributes to forward-aspect stealth. The canards are all-moving and mounted high on the fuselage above the wing root, which distinguishes the J-20's planform immediately from the lower-mounted canards of the Rafale or the JAS 39 Gripen. On static ground photographs, the precise gap sealing around the weapons bay doors is a useful indicator of production standard and build quality.
