History
Based on the Shenyang J-11BS and the Russian Su-30MKK, the J-16 first flew in 2013 and entered PLAAF service around 2015–2016. China developed it domestically with Chinese engines and avionics, reducing dependence on Russian systems.
Variants
The J-16D is an electronic warfare variant with prominent wingtip pods replacing standard missiles, entering service around 2021.
