What is the actual difference between them?

The Spitfire and Bf 109 were broadly matched but philosophically different aircraft. The Bf 109 was a slim, utilitarian design optimised for straight-line speed and high-altitude performance. Its narrow undercarriage made ground handling treacherous, but its fuel-injected engine gave it a decisive early advantage: where a Spitfire pilot pushed over into a dive and watched the engine cut out (carburettor starvation), the 109 simply followed. The Spitfire countered with an elliptical wing that gave unmatched manoeuvrability at medium altitude and an excellent rate of roll that improved with each mark. The 109 was built in greater numbers — over 33,000 against the Spitfire's 20,000 — and was easier to mass-produce, but its cramped cockpit and limited development ceiling became liabilities as the war lengthened. The Spitfire's airframe, by contrast, had headroom for increasingly powerful Merlin and Griffon engines, allowing it to remain competitive until 1945. Armament philosophies also differed: the 109 typically carried a centreline 20 mm cannon firing through the propeller hub, while the Spitfire carried wing-mounted Browning machine guns early on, later mixing cannon and machine guns. Neither aircraft had exceptional range, but the 109's shorter legs made it a liability as an escort fighter over Britain in 1940.

Which would win in a dogfight?

The honest answer from the historical record is: it depended on altitude, mark, and pilot. In the Battle of Britain the result was effectively a draw at the aircraft level — the RAF's victory was decided by radar, ground control, and the fact that 109 pilots were already at the limits of their fuel by the time they reached London. Below 15,000 ft the Spitfire could turn inside the 109 and had the edge in a sustained close-in fight. Above 20,000 ft the early 109E held a speed advantage. The 109's fuel injection meant it could escape a Spitfire by pushing negative-g — a manoeuvre that became so common RAF pilots learned to half-roll and pull rather than follow directly. By 1941–42, the Fw 190 had superseded the 109 over the Channel, and the real Spitfire-vs-109 contest shifted to North Africa and the Eastern Front, where pilot experience and tactical surprise mattered far more than any performance delta. Top aces on both sides flew both types at various points in the war. The consensus among historians is that the Spitfire had a modest structural advantage in the turning fight, while the 109 was marginally better in boom-and-zoom energy tactics. Pilot quality and tactical situation were always the dominant factors.

Which is bigger and faster?

The Bf 109 was the smaller aircraft. The Spitfire Mk I had a wingspan of 36.1 ft (11.0 m) against the 109E's 32.4 ft (9.9 m), and the Spitfire was slightly heavier at around 5,800 lb loaded versus the 109E's 5,500 lb. Top speeds were very close: the Spitfire Mk I reached around 362 mph (583 km/h) at altitude, the Bf 109E about 354 mph (570 km/h) — a difference within the margin of test variation. Later marks widened the gap in both directions: the Spitfire XIV with a Griffon engine reached 448 mph (721 km/h), while the 109K-4 reached 452 mph (728 km/h), making them essentially identical at the end of the war. The 109 was generally regarded as the faster aircraft in a dive, while the Spitfire accelerated better in level flight at medium altitude.

Which countries flew each?

The Spitfire was the definitive RAF fighter and was flown by pilots from across the Commonwealth — Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Rhodesia — as well as Free French, Polish, Czech, and American volunteer pilots. Post-war it served with over 20 air forces including Egypt, India, Israel, and Czechoslovakia, remaining in front-line service into the 1950s. The Bf 109 was the primary fighter of the Luftwaffe and was exported to Germany's allies and clients: Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Finland, Croatia, Slovakia, and Spain (which licence-built the HA-1109 Buchón, keeping the type flying into the 1960s). The Finnish Air Force flew the 109G against Soviet forces, and Swiss 109s were occasionally scrambled against both Luftwaffe and Allied aircraft that violated their airspace.

Which came first, and why does that matter?

The Bf 109 flew first — its prototype flew in May 1935, nearly a year before the Spitfire prototype in March 1936. This gave Germany a head start in production and pilot training. By the time war broke out in September 1939, the Luftwaffe had over 1,000 operational 109s; the RAF had just over 400 Spitfires and Hurricanes combined. The Bf 109's combat debut in the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) gave Luftwaffe pilots and designers invaluable real-world feedback, leading to rapid improvements before the war's major campaigns. The Spitfire entered service with No. 19 Squadron in August 1938 but missed Spain entirely, meaning it went into its first major test — the Battle of Britain — with no combat experience behind it. That gap mattered: early Spitfire pilots had to learn tactics from scratch, sometimes against opponents who had been flying the 109 in anger for three years.

Which will a spotter actually see?

Both survive in significant numbers and are genuinely airworthy. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) at RAF Coningsby keeps several Spitfires and a Hurricane flying, and they appear regularly at UK airshows each summer. The Fighter Collection and private operators around Europe also maintain flying examples. Hearing a Merlin engine at an airshow is still a realistic prospect in the UK. Flying Bf 109s are rarer — the wartime scarcity of originals has been partly addressed by the Buchón, the Spanish licence-built version with a Merlin or Hispano engine, which has been used extensively in films. A handful of genuine late-mark 109s are airworthy worldwide, mostly in private hands in the US and Europe. Static examples are easy to find: the RAF Museum at Hendon and the Imperial War Museum Duxford have Spitfires; Duxford and the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin have 109s. Duxford's Flying Legends airshow is arguably the best single opportunity to see both in the air on the same day.
