History
Designed by R. J. Mitchell and first flown in 1936, the Spitfire became a symbol of the 1940 Battle of Britain. Continuous development through the war saw Merlin and later Griffon engines, with more than 20,000 built across many marks.
Variants
From the early Mk I and the definitive Mk V and IX (Merlin) to the powerful Griffon-engined Mk XIV and naval Seafire. Early marks have a 'razorback' spine; later ones a cut-down rear fuselage and bubble canopy.

In depth
The elliptical planform that makes the Spitfire unmistakable was not an aesthetic whim. Chief designer R. J. Mitchell chose it because a true ellipse minimises induced drag for a given span, and because it allowed the wing root to be thick enough to house a retractable undercarriage while the tips tapered to a razor edge that loaded the airflow cleanly at high speed. The manufacturing penalty was severe — each wing skin had to be formed in compound curves — but the aerodynamic dividend was decisive. Wind-tunnel testing at Farnborough in the mid-1930s confirmed the wing's superiority over simpler planforms, and Mitchell locked it into the design despite complaints from Supermarine's own production staff.
Mitchell did not live to see the aircraft go to war. He died of cancer in June 1937, with fewer than 100 Mk Is ordered. Development passed to chief designer Joe Smith, who shepherded every subsequent mark through a war that demanded continuous improvement. The Spitfire's power roughly doubled between 1936 and 1945: the 1,030 hp Merlin C of the prototype grew to the 2,050 hp Griffon 65 of the Mk XIV, and the top speed rose from around 349 mph to 448 mph without any fundamental redesign of the fuselage.
In combat the Spitfire's finest antagonist was its exact contemporary, the Bf 109. Tactically their strengths were complementary: at the start of the Battle of Britain, the 109E had a fuel-injected engine that let it bunt inverted in a dive while the Spitfire's float carburettor choked and cut out. The RAF's eventual fix — a restrictor washer devised by engineer Beatrice Shilling, nicknamed 'Miss Shilling's orifice' — was a field modification so simple it was fitted by armourers on the flight line. The more complete negative-g carburettor came later. The Spitfire's turn radius was tighter than the 109's at most altitudes; the 109 held an edge in zoom-climb and dive acceleration until the Merlin 61 series arrived with two-stage supercharging in 1942.
Aces who flew it include Adolph Gysbert 'Sailor' Malan, a South African who scored 27 confirmed kills and authored a celebrated set of ten rules for air fighting that circulated in the RAF throughout the war. Johnnie Johnson, the RAF's top-scoring western-front ace with 34 confirmed, flew Spitfires exclusively and later wrote that the type's harmonised controls gave a pilot a sensation of direct physical response that no other aircraft matched.
Production reached 20,351 Spitfires plus 2,646 naval Seafires, spread across 40 sub-marks. Approximately 55 are airworthy worldwide as of the mid-2020s, the largest concentration in private hands in Britain. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at RAF Coningsby operates five, most regularly a Mk IIa (P7350, the oldest airworthy Spitfire and the sole survivor that flew in the actual Battle of Britain) and a Mk Vb. The Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford maintains several for private owners. The Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden flies a Mk Vc. In North America, the best concentration is at the Palm Springs Air Museum, California, and the Planes of Fame at Chino, California. The National Air and Space Museum displays a rare high-altitude Mk VII — the prototype itself, K5054, was lost in a landing accident in 1939. Spotters visiting the RAF Museum Cosford will find multiple marks indoors, including a Mk 22 and the two-seat T Mk 9, one of only a handful of two-seat conversions ever made.
