The SR-71 Blackbird and MiG-25 Foxbat are the two fastest aircraft ever to enter operational service, and their existence was defined by each other. The Foxbat was designed specifically to intercept the Blackbird; the Blackbird was built to outrun everything the Soviets could throw at it. Together they represent the apex of the Cold War aerospace arms race.

They are superficially similar — large, twin-engined, high-altitude, very fast — but were built for completely different purposes. The SR-71 was a strategic reconnaissance aircraft that never carried weapons. It flew unarmed at speeds above Mach 3 and altitudes above 80,000 ft, relying entirely on performance to be uncatchable. Its titanium airframe was engineered to withstand temperatures of over 300°C generated by aerodynamic heating at cruise speed — a design challenge of extraordinary complexity. The MiG-25 was an interceptor designed to shoot down the SR-71 and the B-70 Valkyrie strategic bomber (which was cancelled). It carried four large air-to-air missiles and an enormous radar system, powered by two massive Tumansky R-15 turbojets. The Foxbat's structure was largely welded stainless steel — cheaper and easier than titanium, but heavier. Its speed came from brute engine power rather than aerodynamic refinement. The MiG-25 was optimised for straight-line speed at high altitude; it was not manoeuvrable, had limited range, and used extraordinary quantities of fuel. Both aircraft were so specialised that their operational limitations were as dramatic as their performance figures.
The SR-71 has no weapons and no chance in any conventional dogfight — it would simply outrun the threat and leave. At cruise speed (Mach 3.2+) and altitude (85,000 ft), nothing the Soviets fielded could reach it, and the SR-71's standard evasion tactic against a missile launch was to accelerate, not manoeuvre. The MiG-25's missiles could not reliably guide at those combined speed and altitude combinations. In practice, SR-71s were never shot down — in hundreds of operational missions over denied territory, not a single aircraft was lost to enemy action, though over 4,000 missiles were fired at them in Vietnam and the Middle East. The MiG-25's speed advantage over other aircraft is real: it demonstrated the ability to reach Mach 3.2 in a sprint, though at that speed the engines were effectively destroyed and the airframe risked structural failure. Viktor Belenko's 1976 defection to Japan in a MiG-25P revealed to Western analysts that the Foxbat was not the terrifying super-fighter it appeared in satellite photos — its radar was powerful but primitive, and its manoeuvring at high Mach numbers was severely constrained.
The SR-71 is the larger aircraft. Its wingspan was 55.6 ft (17.0 m) against the MiG-25's 45.8 ft (14.0 m), and at 170,000 lb maximum takeoff weight it was vastly heavier than the MiG-25's 81,570 lb. The SR-71 was faster: its operational cruise speed was Mach 3.2 (approximately 2,100 mph / 3,380 km/h), with a maximum demonstrated speed of Mach 3.3+. The MiG-25 could reach Mach 3.2 briefly in a sprint but its operational limit was around Mach 2.8 to preserve engine life. Both aircraft cruised at altitudes no other operational aircraft could reach: the SR-71 above 85,000 ft (26,000 m), the MiG-25 at around 67,000–75,000 ft (20,000–23,000 m) at maximum intercept profile. The SR-71's range was around 3,200 miles unrefuelled and essentially unlimited with aerial refuelling; the MiG-25 had a combat radius of around 900 miles.
The SR-71 was exclusively American — operated by the USAF and, for a brief period, NASA. It flew from bases in California (Beale AFB), the UK (RAF Mildenhall), and Japan (Kadena AB), conducting reconnaissance missions over the Soviet Union, China, Cuba, North Vietnam, and the Middle East. It was never exported. The MiG-25 was widely exported by the Soviet Union as a symbol of technological prestige: it served with Algeria, India, Iraq, Libya, and Syria. Iraq used MiG-25s extensively in the Iran-Iraq War and the Gulf War; several survived and were later discovered buried in the desert after the 2003 invasion. India's MiG-25 reconnaissance variants (MiG-25RB) flew until 2006, when the fleet was retired as too expensive to maintain. Russia retired its last MiG-25s from service in the early 2000s.
The SR-71's predecessor, the A-12 (the single-seat CIA variant), flew first in April 1962; the SR-71 itself flew in December 1964. The MiG-25 prototype flew in June 1964 — so the two aircraft are essentially contemporaries, with the SR-71 slightly ahead. The MiG-25's development was significantly shaped by intelligence reports about the American B-70 Valkyrie, a Mach 3 strategic bomber that was ultimately cancelled. Soviet engineers designed the Foxbat to intercept an aircraft that never actually entered service, which partly explains its extreme specialisation. When the B-70 was cancelled and replaced by low-level penetration bombers (the B-1), the MiG-25's high-altitude, high-speed intercept mission became less relevant. The SR-71's timing was driven by the U-2 shootdown crisis of 1960 (Francis Gary Powers) — the CIA and USAF needed an aircraft so fast and high that no surface-to-air missile could reach it. Both programmes were responses to adversary threats that were themselves partly misunderstood.
Both aircraft are retired from service and can only be seen statically. The SR-71 fleet was retired in 1990, briefly reinstated in 1995, and permanently retired in 1999. Around 20 SR-71 airframes survive in museums across the United States: the most accessible are at the National Air and Space Museum's Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia and the Air Force Flight Test Museum at Edwards AFB in California. The Duxford Imperial War Museum has one of only two SR-71s outside the United States. MiG-25 examples survive in several countries: the Central Air Force Museum at Monino near Moscow has multiple examples, and various export customers have placed aircraft in national museums. The Belenko MiG-25P that landed in Japan in 1976 was returned to the Soviets in pieces after thorough analysis — so no example of that specific aircraft survives. Both types are dramatic objects in person, far larger than photographs suggest.
