History
Developed by Lockheed's Skunk Works from the A-12, the SR-71 first flew in 1964 and served the USAF from 1966. Its turbojets functioned partly as ramjets at high Mach, and the titanium airframe sustained speeds above Mach 3.2 at over 80,000 feet.
Variants
Production was essentially the SR-71A, with the SR-71B trainer and a single SR-71C; the closely related A-12 and YF-12 preceded it.
Where you'll see it
Retired in 1998 and never UK-based, but Blackbirds operated from RAF Mildenhall during the Cold War and surviving examples are displayed at the Imperial War Museum Duxford and the American Air Museum.
In depth
To understand why the Blackbird looks like nothing else, you have to appreciate the tyranny of heat. At Mach 3.2 friction warmed the skin to several hundred degrees Celsius, so Lockheed's engineers built roughly 85 percent of the airframe from titanium, a metal so hard to machine that they had to invent new tools and, famously, source much of the ore through shell companies from the Soviet Union itself. The aircraft was designed to grow: on the ground the panels fit loosely and the fuel tanks leaked openly, sealing only once thermal expansion in flight closed the gaps. That is why a cold Blackbird sits in a pool of its own JP-7, a special low-volatility fuel so stable you could throw a lit match into it without ignition. The corrugated wing skins, which look like a manufacturing afterthought, were another heat concession, allowing the surface to expand without buckling.
The black paint that gave the jet its name was not for stealth theatre but function, a radar-absorbent, iron-ferrite-loaded coating that also radiated heat away from the structure. Kelly Johnson's team had already learned the shaping tricks on the A-12, and the chines running the length of the fuselage were as much aerodynamic as they were radar-reducing, generating lift and taming the aircraft's behaviour at extreme speed. The engines were the real magic: Pratt & Whitney J58s that bled air around the compressor at high Mach so that the inlet spike and bypass system did most of the compression, the powerplant behaving as a turbo-ramjet hybrid. Managing those moveable inlet spikes was a crew art; an 'unstart', where the shock wave popped out of the inlet, could snap the aircraft sideways violently enough to bang heads against the canopy.
Operationally the SR-71 relied on speed and altitude as its only defence, and it worked. Crews reported that the standard response to a surface-to-air missile launch was simply to accelerate and climb, outrunning the threat; no Blackbird was ever lost to enemy fire despite thousands of missiles reportedly fired at the fleet over North Vietnam, North Korea and the Middle East. It set an absolute speed record in 1976 that still stands for an air-breathing crewed aircraft, and in 1990, on its retirement delivery flight to the Smithsonian, one blistered coast to coast across the United States in just over an hour. Its true rivals were not other aircraft but reconnaissance satellites and, eventually, budget cuts, which is what finally grounded it rather than any Soviet interceptor.
The pilots flew in full pressure suits identical in principle to those worn by astronauts, because a cockpit failure at 80,000 feet would boil the blood. That detail, along with the astronavigation system that took star sightings even in daylight to fix position before GPS existed, gives you a sense of how much the Blackbird belonged to the edge of space rather than ordinary aviation. The reconnaissance-systems officer in the back had no forward view worth the name, navigating and running the sensor suite in near-blindness.
For the spotter, the survivors are the reward, and Britain is unusually well served. The example at Imperial War Museum Duxford sits inside the American Air Museum hangar, close enough to walk beneath the chines and see the corrugations for yourself. Across the Atlantic, the pick of the litter is at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles, the record-breaking delivery aircraft itself, while another anchors the Museum of Flight in Seattle and one hangs dramatically at the Evergreen museum in Oregon. The trainer variant, with its distinctive raised second cockpit for the instructor, lives at the Air Force Flight Test Museum. A hard-won identification tip: on a real Blackbird look for the faint fuel weeping stains that never quite scrub away, and note that the tail fins toe inward, canted toward each other, a subtle detail that photographs rarely capture but which is obvious the moment you stand beside the machine and look down its spine.
