What is the actual difference between them?

The Rafale is a twin-engine, canard-delta multirole fighter with no stealth shaping, carrying weapons externally, but equipped with the SPECTRA integrated electronic warfare and self-protection suite — one of the most sophisticated defensive EW systems on any tactical aircraft. It is nuclear-capable, carrier-capable (Rafale M), and has an extensive combat record in Mali, Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The Su-57 is Russia's fifth-generation fighter, designed for reduced radar cross-section with internal weapon bays and an AESA radar, targeting the same threat environment as the F-22 and J-20. The Su-57's primary AFAR radar (N036 Byelka) combined with L-band wing arrays gives it a sophisticated multi-band detection capability. In terms of weapon payload, the Rafale carries up to 9,500 kg on 14 hardpoints externally — far more than the Su-57's internal bays. For strike missions the Rafale has a larger and more tested weapon suite; for air-to-air the Su-57's internal carriage and stealth approach the engagement differently. The Su-57's stealth gives it a BVR first-detection advantage — if it can close to missile employment range undetected. The Rafale's SPECTRA may degrade the Su-57's radar effectiveness at shorter ranges. The Rafale carries the Meteor BVR missile, with a no-escape zone roughly twice that of the R-77-1 the Su-57 currently employs in its main bay (the longer-range K-77M is in development/early production). If the Rafale detects the Su-57 at Meteor range via datalink or off-board cueing before the Su-57 achieves radar lock, the Meteor's very large no-escape zone becomes decisive. The Rafale's growing export footprint gives it an industrial sustainability advantage — a larger production run means lower unit costs and a longer viable production line.

Which came first, and why does that matter?

The Rafale prototype flew in 1986 and entered service in 2001; the Su-57 prototype flew in 2010 and entered limited service in 2020. The Rafale is nearly two decades older in service terms. That maturity is both an advantage (deep operational experience, well-understood maintenance, combat-proven weapons integration) and a limitation (older avionics architecture in early batches, though F4 standard is current). The Su-57 benefits from more modern computing architecture but has been hobbled by slow production and engine development — the definitive second-stage engine (Product 30) needed for full performance has been in development for years. The Rafale F4 standard with OSF-IT and new datalinks represents a mature platform at the top of its development arc; the Su-57 is still ascending toward its designed capability envelope.

Which will a spotter actually see?

The Rafale is significantly more accessible. It appears at Paris Air Show (Le Bourget) and French air force open days. French Air and Space Force bases — BA113 Saint-Dizier, BA118 Mont-de-Marsan, BA133 Nancy-Ochey — are within reach of European spotters. The French Navy's Rafale M operates from Charles de Gaulle (Toulon home port). Export customers include Indian bases (Ambala, Hasimara), Greek bases (Tanagra, Andravida), Qatari bases (Al-Udeid area), and Egyptian bases. The Su-57's spotting opportunities are limited to MAKS airshow appearances (last notable: 2021) and, under normal circumstances, perimeter views at Kubinka and Akhtubinsk — neither is routinely accessible to foreign visitors.
