History

The Rafale A technology demonstrator first flew in July 1986, leading to production aircraft powered by two SNECMA M88 turbofans. Designed as an omnirole fighter for both the air force and carrier operations, it entered French service from the early 2000s.

Variants

Versions include the single-seat Rafale C, the two-seat Rafale B and the carrier-capable Rafale M. Successive F-standard upgrades have added weapons, sensors and nuclear strike capability, with major exports to India, Egypt, Qatar, Greece, Croatia and the UAE.

The Rafale has seen combat over Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, Iraq and Syria. Though a French aircraft, it regularly thrills UK audiences with full-afterburner displays at RIAT Fairford and other British shows, often operating alongside RAF Typhoons.

In depth

The Rafale exists because France refused to compromise. In the early 1980s, France was a participant in the programme that eventually became the Eurofighter Typhoon, working alongside Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy. The French Air Force requirement differed in one critical respect: France needed a carrier-capable aircraft that could fly from Clemenceau-class decks, and the consortium would not design its common airframe around French carrier requirements. France withdrew from the programme in 1985, just before the Rafale A demonstrator flew, and set about building its own aircraft. The result was a smaller, more compact design that fits a carrier catapult and arrestor system while remaining fully competitive over land. France is now one of the few nations that can develop, manufacture, export and operate the full spectrum of combat aviation from air superiority to nuclear delivery, and the Rafale is the keystone of that independence.

The Rafale's combat record has grown substantially since 2011. French Rafales struck targets in Libya during Operation Unified Protector, becoming among the first NATO aircraft to engage Gaddafi's armour. In Mali from 2013 onward, Rafales conducted strikes under Operation Serval and its successors over enormous distances, sometimes requiring in-flight refuelling from tankers flying from bases in France itself — missions that proved the aircraft's range and precision navigation. Over Iraq and Syria from 2015, Rafales operated daily strike missions alongside coalition aircraft. The SCALP cruise missile, carried externally and released from stand-off range, became a Rafale signature weapon. India's Rafale F3-R jets are similarly nuclear-capable under Indian command, giving the aircraft a strategic dimension few Western export aircraft can match.

Against the Eurofighter Typhoon, the aircraft it most directly competes with in the export market, the Rafale presents a genuinely different proposition: slightly smaller and lighter, carrying the Spectra self-protection suite that is widely regarded as superior to the Typhoon's DASS, and uniquely capable among current European fighters of carrier operations. The Typhoon maintains a sustained energy advantage at medium altitude. Export customers have chosen both aircraft: India bought Rafales partly on the strength of a demanding multi-aircraft evaluation, while Saudi Arabia and Kuwait chose the Eurofighter. The competition has continued into the 2020s with Greece, Croatia and the UAE selecting the Rafale.

For spotters, French air force bases offer the best access. Base aérienne 113 Saint-Dizier-Robinson is the primary nuclear-capable Rafale base and hosts occasional open days. The Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, held in odd-numbered years, has featured Rafale displays since the 1980s. British aviation enthusiasts at RIAT regularly see Rafale B, C or M variants, and the French Navy's Rafale M is particularly worth watching because of its reinforced undercarriage and the distinctive arrester hook that hangs below the tail nozzles — visually different from the land-based variants even at a distance.

One spotter detail that separates the Rafale from superficially similar designs: the S-shaped intake duct on each side of the fuselage is deliberately curved to hide the engine face from radar energy entering through the intake, an approach to intake stealth that is more aggressive than on any of its 1970s-generation predecessors. In the air, afterburner from the two M88-2 engines produces a clean, relatively short flame — shorter and less spectacular than an F-15 in full reheat but the Rafale has considerably less frontal area to heat. The RBE2-AA active electronically scanned array radar antenna, visible when the nose access panel is open during ground servicing, presents a flat honeycomb-textured face rather than a curved dish — a useful identification point during any static display.
