Eurofighter Typhoon vs Dassault Rafale

The Typhoon and Rafale are the two premier European fighter jets of the 21st century — products of the same collaborative programme that split acrimoniously in the late 1980s when France went its own way. Their rivalry is as much political and industrial as military, and both aircraft compete aggressively in the same export markets.

What is the actual difference between them?

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine canard-delta multirole fighter developed by a four-nation consortium (UK, Germany, Italy, Spain); the Dassault Rafale is a twin-engine canard-delta omnirole fighter developed solely by France. They share a superficial configuration — twin engines, canard foreplanes, delta wing — because they descend from a common European Fighter Aircraft study before France departed over workshare disputes in 1985. The Typhoon is optimised for air superiority and supercruise; the Rafale was designed from the outset for carrier operations as well as land basing, giving it stronger landing gear, a folding option, and a broader initial strike tasking. The Rafale's MBDA Meteor missile and Thales RBE2-AA AESA radar make it highly capable BVR; the Typhoon's CAPTOR-E AESA and Meteor integration (from Tranche 3/4 onwards) close that gap. The Typhoon is generally considered slightly superior in pure air-to-air at high altitude; the Rafale's omnirole avionics and nuclear delivery tasking (ASMP-A) give it an edge in strike and deterrent roles.

Which would win in a dogfight?

This question was partially answered by a famous 2009 exercise (Tiger Meet and related encounters) where Rafale and Typhoon pilots flew against each other; French pilots subsequently claimed the Rafale had performed well, British and German pilots disputed characterisations — the results remain classified. Kinematically: the Typhoon's thrust-to-weight of approximately 1.07–1.18:1 (by variant/load) exceeds the Rafale's approximately 0.97:1 (M88-2 engines, 75 kN each). The Typhoon's supercruise at approximately Mach 1.21 allows it to control engagement geometry, a tactical advantage the Rafale cannot replicate. The Rafale compensates with an excellent SPECTRA electronic warfare suite, earlier integration of Meteor, and a highly capable short-range MICA IR/EM missile combination. Both carry essentially the same BVR weapon (Meteor) and similar off-boresight IR missiles. The Typhoon's energy advantage at high altitude is real; the Rafale's electronic warfare and sensor fusion may compensate. No unclassified verdict is reliable.

Rafale operators: France (Armée de l'Air et de l'Espace and Aéronavale, approximately 200 total), Egypt (24 + follow-on orders), Qatar (36 on order, deliveries ongoing), India (36 Rafale B/C, IAF), Greece (18 Rafale F3-R), Croatia (14 ex-French Rafales), UAE (80 on order), Indonesia (42 on order). The Rafale has proven a stronger export success in recent years after a long drought.

Which came first, and why does that matter?

Both aircraft trace to the same European Fighter Aircraft programme studies of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Rafale prototype flew in July 1986 — before the Typhoon prototype in March 1994 — because France departed the consortium and pressed ahead independently. The Typhoon entered French service in 2001 (France only); the Rafale entered French service in 2004. France's decision to go it alone was costly in time and money but preserved complete industrial sovereignty — France controls every component of the Rafale, unlike the Typhoon whose workshare agreements complicate upgrades and export approvals. This matters for export customers: buying Rafale means buying French, with all the political implications; buying Typhoon means navigating a four-nation consortium. Germany's arms export restrictions have blocked Typhoon sales (e.g. to Saudi Arabia at various points), a constraint that does not apply to the Rafale.

Which will a spotter actually see?

Both are major European airshow performers. The RAF Typhoon Display Team appears at virtually every UK and major European airshow (RIAT, Farnborough, Waddington, Airpower Austria). German, Italian, and Spanish Typhoon teams rotate. The Patrouille de France flies Alphajet rather than Rafale, but the French Air Force Rafale solo display is a regular appearance at Le Bourget, RIAT, and other major events. French carrier Rafale Ms can be seen at maritime airshows. Greek Rafales are beginning to appear at Hellenic Air Force events. Both aircraft have very distinctive canard-delta silhouettes that are immediately distinguishable from each other in flight — the Typhoon appears long and angular, the Rafale more compact and rounded.
