ALFLEX (Automatic Landing Flight Experiment) was a Japanese unmanned subscale demonstrator designed by NASDA and NAL to validate autonomous landing technology for a prospective Japanese space plane, performing a series of autoland drop tests in Australia in 1996.

The absence of engines and presence of a retractable or fixed skid undercarriage are key identifiers.

History
NASDA and NAL developed ALFLEX as part of Japan's HOPE-X spaceplane programme feasibility studies. The vehicle was designed to be dropped from a helicopter and autonomously fly to a runway landing, validating the guidance, navigation, and control technology needed for an orbital lifting-body reentry vehicle. Test flights were conducted at the Woomera test range in Australia in 1996. The broader HOPE-X programme was eventually cancelled for budgetary reasons.
Variants
ALFLEX was a single configuration; a related but larger vehicle, HYFLEX, tested hypersonic aerodynamics during the same HOPE-X research programme.
Where you'll see it
ALFLEX conducted approximately 10 automated landing tests at Woomera in 1996, all successful, before the programme concluded. It never entered operational use and is of purely research historical significance.
