History
Boeing's 777 first flew in 1994 as a clean-sheet twinjet designed largely on computer. The Extended Range -300ER, first flown in 2003, stretched the fuselage and added the colossal GE90-115B engines, raked wingtips and extra fuel to challenge the four-engined 747 and A340 on the longest routes. It became the definitive large twin of its era.
Variants
The 777 family ranges from the original -200 and -300 to the long-range -200LR and freighter. The forthcoming 777X (777-9) introduces folding wingtips and new GE9X engines as the -300ER's successor.
Where you'll see it
In the UK the -300ER is a Heathrow regular, flown by British Airways and a parade of foreign carriers such as Emirates, Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways on intercontinental services. Manchester sees them too on long-haul and premium leisure routes.
In depth
The defining number on the 777-300ER is thrust. Its two General Electric GE90-115B engines are the highest-thrust certified powerplants in the world, each rated at around 115,000 pounds of thrust, and that raw output translates into a visual signature that is unmistakable at the fence. The engine inlet measures roughly 3.25 metres across, wider than the entire fuselage of a 737, so that a single nacelle on the -300ER dwarfs a whole narrowbody parked nearby. Nothing else in regular service presents engines of quite that scale, and once the eye grasps the proportion the aircraft identifies itself from a great distance.
No operator tells the aircraft's story better than Emirates. With a fleet of around 200 of the type, the Dubai carrier built a global long-haul network almost entirely on the -300ER, funnelling traffic through a single hub and connecting continents on point-to-point sectors that the aircraft's range and capacity made economic for the first time. The -300ER is what made mass long-haul work at that scale: enough seats to fill a large aircraft profitably, enough range to reach the far side of the world, and twin-engine operating costs well below the four-engined jets it replaced.
Structurally the aircraft belongs to an earlier material era than the composites that followed. The 777 is roughly ten per cent composite by weight, concentrated mainly in the empennage, against around fifty per cent on the later 787, so the -300ER remains fundamentally a metal aircraft and looks it, with a smooth aluminium sheen quite different from the richer, darker surfaces of the carbon-fibre generation. Telling it from its relatives is a matter of length, engine and wingtip. Against the shorter 777-200 the -300ER is visibly longer with a fuller nacelle profile; against the earlier non-ER 777-300 it is separated by its raked wingtips and its GE90 engines. The six-wheel main bogie is another giveaway, chosen by Boeing to spread the immense weight across more tyres and pavement while keeping the wheels compact enough for standard gate and taxiway geometry; on rotation the long trucks tilt back and the rearmost wheels leave the ground last, a characteristic sight on departure that no twin-bogie airliner reproduces.
Change is now visible at the fence. The 777X, with its folding wingtips and new GE9X engines, is beginning to enter the picture, and spotters at Heathrow are starting to catch the earliest signs of the changeover as the next generation arrives alongside the established fleet. For the moment, though, the -300ER remains the backbone of premium long-haul, and the best place in Britain to appreciate it is the arrivals stream onto Heathrow's runway 27L just before the morning peak, when Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and British Airways 777s stack up on final approach in quick succession. Standing under that flightpath in the grey early light as one heavy after another sweeps in, each with its outsized GE90s and six-wheel trucks extending in turn, gives the clearest possible sense of why this aircraft reshaped the economics of flying the very longest routes on Earth.
