The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American single-seat fighter-bomber, instantly recognised by the shark-mouth markings worn by the Flying Tigers in China.

History
First flown in October 1938, the P-40 was a re-engined development of the radial-powered P-36 Hawk, fitted with the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710. Some 13,738 were built before production ended in 1944, making it one of the most-produced American fighters of the war.
Variants
Early Tomahawks gave way to the more heavily armed Kittyhawk and Warhawk marks. British and Commonwealth designations Tomahawk and Kittyhawk covered successive engine and armament upgrades.
Where you'll see it
The RAF and Commonwealth air forces flew Tomahawks and Kittyhawks extensively, especially in the North African desert campaign where the type became a Desert Air Force workhorse. Airworthy examples regularly appear at UK airshows such as Duxford.
