The Dunne D.8 was a pioneering British tailless biplane designed by J.W. Dunne and notable for being among the earliest aircraft to demonstrate inherent stability through wing sweep and twist.

History

J.W. Dunne began experimenting with swept, tailless wing configurations from around 1906, convinced that aerodynamic stability could be designed into the wing itself rather than relying on the pilot. The D.8 was his most refined biplane design, flown at Eastchurch in 1911 and later demonstrated in France and the United States. It attracted considerable attention for its ability to fly hands-off and influenced later tailless research, including early work by Dunne's licensees abroad.

Variants

Earlier Dunne designs (D.1 through D.7) were progressive refinements; the D.8 represented the most mature biplane expression of the concept before Dunne moved on.
