Embraer E170
Embraer · Brazil · first flew 2002 · airliner
The Embraer E170 is the shortest of the first-generation E-Jet family, seating 66-80 passengers in a 2-2 all-aisle-seat layout on a fuselage shorter than the E175.
Recognition (WEFT)
| W — Wings | Low-mounted, swept |
|---|---|
| E — Engines | 2 × turbofan, wing-mounted |
| F — Fuselage | Shortest E-Jet first generation — 26.0 m fuselage with 66-80 seats; nose is shorter and stubbier than E190 |
| T — Tail | Conventional |
WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.
Spot it by:
- Shortest E-Jet first generation — 26.0 m fuselage with 66-80 seats; nose is shorter and stubbier than E190
- GE CF34-8E engines in rounded nacelles under swept wing; 2-2 seating throughout — no middle seats
- Smaller fuselage cross-section than E190/195 is not visible externally; identify by shorter overall length
Shorter than the E175 (31.68 m) — most easily seen on the ramp by comparing nose-to-wing and wing-to-tail proportions; both have the same wing, making the E170's fuselage look proportionally stubby.
Specifications
- The Embraer E170 has a length of 29.9 m (98 ft).
- It has a wingspan of 26 m (85 ft).
- Its maximum speed is 870 km/h (541 mph).
- Typical crew: 2 flight crew.

History
First flown in February 2002, the E170 entered service with LOT Polish Airlines in 2004 and demonstrated the E-Jet family concept, though the E175 ultimately outsold it significantly in the US regional market.
Variants
The E170 was followed by the stretched E175, then the wider-cabin E190 and E195; the E170-E2 second-generation variant uses Pratt & Whitney GTF engines.
Where you'll see it
Operated by LOT, Air Canada Jazz, and several smaller carriers; never achieved the E175's US scope-clause success but remains in service globally.
