The F8F-1 is the initial production Bearcat, the ultimate expression of piston-engine carrier fighter design — compact, incredibly fast for its era, and armed with four .50 cal guns on a shorter fin than the later F8F-2.

Spot it by:

Against F8F-2: the shorter, less angular fin is the definitive cue. Machine-gun muzzles (four small holes) vs cannon muzzles (four larger holes) confirm armament type but require close inspection. Both marks share the tiny, muscular fuselage profile unique among naval fighters. Against the F6F Hellcat: the Bearcat is dramatically smaller with a rounder, fatter nose cowling.

History

First flown 21 August 1944; 765 F8F-1s built. The Bearcat was designed as a pure point-defence fighter, minimising everything except engine power and climb rate. It arrived too late for WWII combat but became the standard USN carrier fighter 1945–1950. France's Aéronavale flew Bearcats in combat in Indochina 1951–1954; the RTAF (Thailand) was the last operator until 1962.

F8F-1B (four 20 mm cannon instead of .50 cals), F8F-2 (taller fin, 20 mm cannon standard), F8F-2P (photo-reconnaissance).

Where you'll see it

USN 1945–1952, French Aéronavale 1950–1955 (Indochina combat), Royal Thai Air Force 1952–1962. Famous as the Reno air racer 'Rare Bear' (NX777L), which set a piston-engine speed record of 850 km/h in 1989. Numerous airworthy survivors.
