The Y-12 is a rugged high-wing twin-turboprop STOL utility transport; the Twin Panda designation covers the improved, Western-avionics export development marketed internationally.

Identify it by the high straight braced wing carrying two turboprop nacelles above fixed tricycle landing gear. The fuselage is boxy and slab-sided with large square cabin windows. A conventional tail and short nose complete the utilitarian look.

History
Developed from the earlier Y-11, the Y-12 first flew in 1982 and drew on Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A power for reliability. The Twin Panda refined the Y-12 (IV) with uprated undercarriage and upgraded avionics for the export market. Though orders were taken, that specific variant saw limited take-up while the base Y-12 sold widely.
Variants
Successive marks ran from the Y-12 (I) and (II) through the (IV) and the modernised Y-12E and Y-12F with greater capacity. The Twin Panda was the uprated commuter development. Specialised versions cover survey, parachute-training and maritime patrol duties.
Where you'll see it
The type holds no UK operational role but achieved notable Western certification success, gaining UK CAA and US FAA type approval. Export operators span Africa, South America and Asia, used for regional passenger, cargo and utility flying. Its low operating cost suits austere-strip commuter work.
