Dornier 228-201

Dornier · Germany · first flew 1982 · transport aircraft

The Dornier 228-201 is the stretched 19-passenger variant of the Do 228 commuter turboprop, sharing the same distinctive TNT supercritical wing and square-section fuselage as the shorter -100 series. It offers improved passenger capacity for the same operating costs.

WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.

Spot it by:

Visually identical to the Do 228-100 but slightly longer; the extra fuselage section ahead of the wing gives a longer nose-to-wing distance. The square fuselage, TNT wing, T-tail, and twin turboprops remain the key identifiers.

History

The -200 series was certificated in 1982, extending the -100's fuselage by approximately 1.52 metres. The -201 designation denotes the updated engine and systems standard introduced progressively during the production run. HAL in India produced the aircraft under licence, and the current -212 NG (New Generation) continues production for utility, maritime patrol, and commuter roles.

Variants

Within the -200 series, the -201 introduced upgraded Garrett engines and avionics; the current -212 NG uses FADEC-equipped TPE331-10 engines and a modern glass cockpit.

Where you'll see it

Operates with regional airlines, military and coastguard units, and remote-area operators globally; the Indian Navy and Coast Guard are among the largest military operators.
