The HAL HJT-16 Kiran is India's first indigenous jet trainer, designed and built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to provide intermediate and advanced training for Indian Air Force pilots. It bridges the gap between piston trainers and high-performance combat aircraft.

History

Development began in the late 1950s and the prototype flew in 1964, with production deliveries commencing in 1968. The Kiran was a significant milestone as it was the first aircraft designed and built entirely in India. Over 190 were eventually produced across Mk I and Mk II variants.

Variants

The Mk IA introduced a more powerful Rolls-Royce Viper engine; the Mk II featured hardpoints for weapons training and a more capable avionics suite, enabling light combat duties.

Where you'll see it

The Kiran served as the IAF's primary jet trainer for decades and also equipped the Surya Kiran aerobatic display team, remaining in limited service into the 2010s before gradual replacement by the HAL HJT-36 Sitara.
