The Interstate TDR-1 was a pioneering radio- and television-guided assault drone developed by the US Navy during World War II, designed to carry a torpedo or bomb to heavily defended targets without risking a pilot.

History
Project Option, the TDR-1 programme, was an early attempt at precision guided munitions. Over 100 TDR-1s were used operationally in the Pacific in 1944, guided by operators in TBM Avenger control aircraft watching live TV images from the drone's nose camera. Results were mixed and the programme was cancelled in favour of conventional tactics.
Variants
The XTD2R-1 and XTD3R-1 were development prototypes leading to the TDR-1 production standard; the assault drone concept was ahead of its time but the technology was insufficiently mature for reliable combat use.

Operated by Special Air Task Force 1 in the Pacific Theatre in 1944; the TDR-1 represented the first US combat use of guided assault drones and was a direct ancestor of modern cruise missiles.
