The Junkers J.I was a pioneering all-metal German infantry contact-patrol and close-support biplane of World War I, notable as the first all-metal aircraft to reach large-scale production. Its corrugated Duralumin skin and internally braced thick wing were revolutionary concepts.

A sesquiplane with a very large upper wing and small lower stub wing, corrugated metal skinning, and a blunt armoured nose. The all-metal construction and thick cantilever-style wings set it apart from all fabric-covered contemporaries. Note: provided dimensions were corrupt (cm recorded as m); corrected to ~9.1 m length, ~16.0 m span.

History

Designed by Hugo Junkers and entering service in 1917, the J.I featured an armoured steel nosecap protecting the engine, crew, and fuel. Although heavy and unmaneuverable, it proved resilient to ground fire during infantry contact patrol missions on the Western Front. It demonstrated the viability of all-metal aircraft construction, influencing all subsequent Junkers designs.

Variants

The J.I was the sole production version; earlier Junkers all-metal designs (J.2, J.3, J.4 prototype) led to it, with the J.I being the military designation for the Junkers J.4.
