The JO-1 was the US Navy designation for the Lockheed Model 12 Electra Junior, a scaled-down twin-engine transport derived from the famous Lockheed 10 Electra. It served as a staff and liaison transport for senior officers.

History

The Lockheed Model 12 was designed in 1936 as a smaller, faster development of the Model 10, intended for executive transport and feeder airline use. The US Navy and Army acquired examples as the JO-1 and C-40 respectively for VIP and staff transport duties in the late 1930s.

Variants

The JO-1 was the initial Navy variant; the JO-2 followed. The Army designated the same aircraft the C-40. The Lockheed 12 also saw military service with several other nations.

Served with the US Navy in small numbers for VIP and staff transport; also used by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Corps. Amelia Earhart used a modified Lockheed 10A, the larger sibling.
