History
Messerschmitt's design first flew under jet power in 1942 and entered Luftwaffe service in mid-1944, powered by two Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets slung beneath gently swept wings. Engine unreliability, fuel shortages and vulnerability during takeoff and landing limited its impact despite its blistering speed.
Variants
The A-1a Schwalbe was the primary interceptor, while the A-2a Sturmvogel was optimised as a fighter-bomber. Two-seat B-1a aircraft served as trainers and night fighters, and reconnaissance versions were also produced.

Flown by units such as Kommando Nowotny and JG 7 against USAAF bomber streams over Germany in 1944 and 1945, the type was not a British aircraft, but captured examples were extensively evaluated in the UK and the US and shaped postwar swept-wing design. Preserved originals are rare and held mainly in German and American collections.
In depth
The Me 262's engine, the Junkers Jumo 004B, was as consequential as the airframe it powered, and as troubled. It was the world's first axial-flow turbojet to enter mass production, running on J2 aviation gasoline or diesel fuel and producing 1,984 lb of thrust. The compressor blades were manufactured from mild steel rather than the heat-resistant nickel alloys used in British Whittle-derived designs, because Germany lacked sufficient nickel reserves — a resource constraint that forced ingenious compromises including hollow turbine blades cooled by internal airflow. The result was a engine with a turbine-blade life measured in hours (originally as few as ten; eventually around 25) and a catastrophic failure mode: if a pilot opened the throttle too quickly from idle, the compressor stalled and the engine either surged violently or flamed out. Every Me 262 pilot was trained to advance throttle slowly and deliberately, even in combat.
The aircraft's swept wing — a 18.5-degree sweepback — was not initially planned as a high-speed aerodynamic measure. Messerschmitt's aerodynamicists adopted the sweep to balance the aircraft after the designed nose-mounted piston engine was replaced by heavier jet nacelles under the wings, moving the centre of lift rearward. The sweep was essentially a centre-of-gravity fix. Its fortuitous effect — delaying compressibility drag at the aircraft's 900 km/h top speed — was not fully understood by the German engineers at the time, though captured documentation and postwar testimony clarified this. The Americans and British who accessed German wind-tunnel research in 1945 found data that directly informed designs including the Boeing B-47 Stratojet and the North American F-86 Sabre.
The story of Hitler's insistence on the aircraft as a 'Blitzbomber' rather than an interceptor is historically more nuanced than the popular account. Hitler did mandate a bomber capability, and modifications to carry bombs delayed the interceptor programme. But Messerschmitt's own delays, the destruction of engine factories by Allied bombing, and Luftwaffe training bottlenecks were equally responsible for the type's late entry. The first unit to operate it in the interceptor role, Kommando Nowotny, was formed in September 1944 under Major Walter Nowotny, Germany's fourth-highest-scoring ace with 258 victories. Nowotny was killed in his Me 262 on 8 November 1944, most likely shot down by P-51s while attempting to land — the aircraft's most vulnerable phase.
JG 7 Hindenburg, the first full Geschwader of Me 262 interceptors, began operations in February 1945 and achieved kill ratios that briefly alarmed USAAF planners. In one engagement on 18 March 1945, a formation of 37 Me 262s claimed 25 bombers and 5 fighters for a loss of 3 of their own — though actual losses on both sides were lower than claims. USAAF tacticians responded by staking P-51s at low altitude around German jet bases; the Me 262 could not accelerate quickly enough on takeoff and landing to evade interception, and dozens were destroyed at their airfields.
Around 1,433 Me 262s were completed, of which perhaps 300 saw active combat. An estimated five or six airframes in original condition survive globally; the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago holds one, and the Deutsches Museum in Munich another. In recent decades, Messerschmitt Foundation and private projects have built airworthy reproductions from original drawings, and one flew at Oshkosh AirVenture in 2006. The National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia holds an original complete example that is among the most studied jet artifacts in the world.
