History

First flown in 1955 and in service from 1959, the MiG-21 was conceived as a lightweight, cheap Mach 2 interceptor. Around 11,000 were built, equipping more than 50 air forces across the Cold War and beyond.

Variants

Successive generations ran from the early MiG-21F day-fighter through radar-equipped PF and SM versions to the much-improved MiG-21bis. Licensed and developed copies include the Chinese Chengdu J-7.

Where you'll see it

Ubiquitous in conflicts from Vietnam to the Middle East, the MiG-21 remains in limited service today. Preserved examples can be seen in UK museums and the type occasionally features at European airshows, though it never served the RAF.

In depth

The MiG-21's tailed-delta configuration — full delta wing combined with a conventional all-moving tailplane — was chosen after the Soviet Central Aerodynamics Institute (TsAGI) concluded in the mid-1950s that a pure delta created excessive pitch instability at high angles of attack. The separate tailplane gave the pilot authority that a pure delta (as used on contemporaries like the Convair F-102) could not provide. The configuration trades some of the pure delta's lift advantage for handling characteristics a combat pilot can actually exploit at close range.

The nose intake design that defines the MiG-21's profile solved a genuine engineering problem with a remarkably compact mechanism. The central shock cone — the pointed translating body inside the intake — moves forward at supersonic speeds to position the oblique shockwave precisely at the intake lip, maximising pressure recovery and feeding the R-11 (later R-13) turbojet efficiently across a speed range from near-zero to Mach 2. The penalty is that the intake occupies the aircraft's nose, leaving no space for the radar antenna. Early MiG-21 variants carried only a basic ranging radar; the PFM and subsequent marks added a more capable but still small set, and the MiG-21bis eventually received a genuinely useful pulse-Doppler radar, but the nose inlet always imposed limits that Soviet designers eventually resolved only by moving to side inlets on the MiG-23.

In combat the type's most significant test was the Vietnam War, where MiG-21PF and PFM variants met F-105 Thunderchiefs and F-4 Phantoms over North Vietnam. The MiG-21 initially carried only two K-13 infrared missiles and a single belly gun pod, sometimes omitted to save weight. North Vietnamese pilots, trained by Soviet and Chinese instructors, developed specific tactics: use ground control intercept radar to position behind bomber formations, fire missiles at close range, and break off before American escorts could engage. The kill-to-loss ratio on the Vietnamese side fluctuated by year and circumstances, but the MiG-21's ability to threaten large and expensive American strike aircraft with a cheap, light aircraft forced the US Navy to establish its Naval Fighter Weapons School — Top Gun — in 1969 specifically to address the degradation in American air-to-air combat skills.

Israel received intelligence on MiG-21 performance through Operation Diamond in 1966, when an Iraqi Air Force pilot defected with his aircraft intact to Hatzor air base. Israeli and American engineers tested the aircraft exhaustively, and the results informed the F-4 Phantom's development and the specific tactics Israeli pilots used in the 1967 and 1973 wars to achieve favourable kill ratios against Arab MiG-21 operators.

The Indian Air Force operated MiG-21s from 1963 and they saw combat in the 1965 and 1971 wars with Pakistan. India's fleet was maintained into the 2020s, though a high attrition rate through structural fatigue and engine failures led to the type being nicknamed 'flying coffin' by critics of the extended service life. The final Indian examples were retired in 2025.

With approximately 11,496 built across the Soviet Union and under license in Czechoslovakia, India, and China (as the Chengdu J-7, which itself spawned the JF-17 family), the MiG-21 is by production number the most-built supersonic aircraft in history. Surplus aircraft are common on the European military museum circuit: examples are on display at the Imperial War Museum Duxford's Cold War display, the RAF Museum Cosford, the Midland Air Museum at Coventry, and the Newark Air Museum. Poland, Romania and Finland — former Warsaw Pact or Soviet-adjacent operators — have dispersed significant numbers into public collections. Airworthy examples operated by private owners in the United States fly on warbird circuits, and several appear annually at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh.
