History
The MiG-35 name first appeared in 2007 as a rebadged MiG-29M demonstrator, but the definitive prototype flew in 2016 and was unveiled in 2017. It entered Russian Aerospace Forces service in 2019.
Variants
Built as the single-seat MiG-35S and twin-seat MiG-35UB/D, with optional thrust-vectoring engines. Production has remained very limited and several export bids have failed.

In depth
The MiG-35 is most accurately described as a thoroughgoing modernisation of the MiG-29M/M2 rather than a new design, and understanding that lineage is essential to understanding both what the aircraft is and why its procurement history has been so thin. The original MiG-29 entered Soviet service in 1983 as a point-defence interceptor with short range, limited avionics, and no beyond-visual-range weapons capability worth mentioning. Mikoyan spent the following decades incrementally addressing those limitations through a succession of variants: the MiG-29S added limited BVR capability; the MiG-29M (9.15) was a substantially redesigned aircraft with a new fly-by-wire system, increased internal fuel, and a cleaner avionics architecture; the MiG-29K was a navalized variant for the Indian and Russian carriers. The MiG-35 sits at the top of that evolutionary stack.
What the MiG-35 adds over the MiG-29M is significant on paper: an AESA radar (the Zhuk-A or Zhuk-AME, depending on variant and contract), a fully glass cockpit with wide-angle holographic HUD, a passive optical targeting system (OLS-UE) mounted ahead of the windscreen offset to the right in a spherical housing that is one of the type's clearest visual identifiers, improved electronic warfare coverage, and the option to fit RD-33MK engines with thrust-vectoring nozzles. The airframe itself is meaningfully different from the basic MiG-29 in having a reduced radar cross-section through surface treatment and inlet geometry changes, though it makes no claim to low-observable performance in the F-35 or Su-57 sense.
The procurement record is the part of the MiG-35 story that requires plain statement: it has been poor. Russia placed an initial order for six aircraft in 2018, with production deliveries to the Russian Aerospace Forces confirmed in 2019. Reported follow-on orders have been small. No foreign customer has taken delivery of a production MiG-35 as of mid-2026. The aircraft was a competitor in several high-profile export contests — most notably India's MRCA competition for 126 aircraft, where it was evaluated alongside the F/A-18E/F, Eurofighter Typhoon, Rafale, Gripen, and F-16IN — and it did not win any of them. India ultimately selected the Rafale. Malaysia, Egypt, and several other markets that appeared to be prospects did not materialise into orders.
The reasons are not mysterious. The MiG-35 entered the export market at a time when Russia's defence industrial capacity and support reliability were already being questioned, concerns that intensified sharply after 2022. The aircraft's life-cycle cost and serviceability record on prior MiG-29 variants had not always inspired confidence in potential buyers. And in the relevant performance tier, the competition — particularly the Rafale and Gripen E — offered demonstrably mature avionics, combat-proven export support networks, and in the Rafale's case, a fighting record.
Visually separating the MiG-35 from the MiG-29 family at a distance is genuinely difficult because the fundamental planform is unchanged: twin canted fins, wide-set fuselage-mounted engines with large leading-edge root extensions that blend into the forward fuselage, and the characteristic wide, flat underside. The OLS sensor sphere offset to starboard ahead of the windscreen is the most reliable close-in tell on the MiG-35 versus an older MiG-29 variant. The twin-seat MiG-35UB/D has a longer nose with tandem cockpits. Against the Su-35, the distinction is more immediately obvious: the Su-35 is a larger aircraft entirely, has a single large spine that runs from the cockpit to the base of the twin fins, and features different intake geometry. The MiG-35 retains the narrower, twin-engine spacing and lower profile of the Fulcrum family rather than the Flanker's wide, high spine.
