The SAI Ambrosini Sagittario ('Archer') was an Italian experimental swept-wing jet fighter prototype that became the first Italian aircraft to break the sound barrier in a shallow dive in 1953. It was designed to explore transonic flight characteristics.

History
Developed by SAI Ambrosini in the early 1950s, the Sagittario was Italy's most advanced domestic fighter design of the era. Although it demonstrated impressive performance, it was not ordered into production as Italy elected to procure established foreign designs instead.
Variants
The Sagittario 2 was a refined development with a larger engine; both remained prototypes.
