The GR.1 was the RAF's primary tactical strike aircraft through the 1970s and 1980s, identifiable above all by its over-wing pylons — a feature unique among Western attack aircraft of the era.

- Over-wing pylons on upper wing surface — a signature Jaguar feature visible from any direction
- Chisel-nosed profile with long, flat nose housing NAVWASS inertial navigation system
- Twin Adour engines giving closely spaced, rectangular exhaust nozzles side by side
The over-wing pylons are the single most distinctive Jaguar feature — no other aircraft of the period carried weapons above the wing like this. The flat, chisel nose and closely spaced twin exhausts confirm the type. The GR.1 lacks the FLIR blister under the nose of the GR.1A and GR.3A.

History
Entered RAF service 1973 with 54 Squadron at Coltishall. The GR.1 replaced the Phantom and Phantom-supplemented Phantom in the RAF Germany strike role. 165 GR.1s delivered to the RAF. Saw combat in the Gulf War 1991 in the low-level strike role.
Variants
The GR.1A added a FLIR beneath the nose. The T.2 is the two-seat trainer. French Air Force operated the Jaguar A and E variants with different avionics.
Where you'll see it
RAF 1973-2007 (as GR.1/3A); export service in India (Shamsher) and Oman. Static examples at Cosford, Duxford, and Manston. Indian Jaguars remained in service into the 2020s.
