History
The Su-11 was an evolution of the Su-9 Fishpot, incorporating the more capable Oryol-D radar and a new weapons fit. It entered service in limited numbers in the early 1960s as a stop-gap before the more capable Su-15 became available. The type served alongside the Su-9 in Soviet air defence units.
Variants
The Su-11 was itself derived from the Su-9; it served as a direct bridge to the twin-engined Su-15.
Where you'll see it
Served with Soviet air defence (PVO) interceptor regiments from around 1964, operating in the all-weather interception role until replaced by the Su-15.
