The 1902 Wright Glider was the culmination of the Wright Brothers' glider research programme, and the first aircraft in history to demonstrate fully effective three-axis aerodynamic control. Its development directly enabled the powered Wright Flyer of 1903.

History

Built and flown at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in the autumn of 1902, this glider incorporated a moveable rear rudder linked to the wing-warping system, solving the adverse yaw problem that had plagued earlier designs. The Wrights made over 1,000 glides in it, establishing the control principles they would apply to the Flyer. It remains one of the most important aircraft in aviation history.

Variants

The 1902 glider was built in a single configuration; the Wrights made refinements during the season including adding the moveable rudder partway through testing.

Where you'll see it

Used exclusively by Orville and Wilbur Wright for experimental gliding at Kitty Hawk in 1902; a replica is displayed at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.
