Recognition (WEFT)
| W — Wings | Low-mounted, swept |
|---|---|
| E — Engines | 4 × turbofan, wing-mounted |
| F — Fuselage | Shortest A340, with a wingspan greater than its fuselage length |
| T — Tail | Conventional |
WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.
Spot it by:
- Four CFM56 turbofans, two under each wing
- Shortest A340, with a wingspan greater than its fuselage length
- Winglet about 2.7 m tall on each wingtip instead of the earlier Airbus wingtip fence
A four-engined Airbus whose wingspan is slightly greater than the fuselage length, the only A340 version for which this is true.
Specifications
- The Airbus A340-200 has a length of 59.4 m (195 ft).
- It has a wingspan of 60.3 m (198 ft).
- Typical crew: 2.

History
Certified together with the A340-300 on 22 December 1992 after a first flight on 1 April 1992, it was the first A340 delivered, to Lufthansa on 2 February 1993.
Variants
It uses CFM56-5C4 engines and seats around 240 to 261 passengers in three classes. It has the same wing as the A340-300 but a shorter fuselage.
Where you'll see it
Lufthansa began revenue service with it on 15 March 1993. On 16 June 1993 an A340-200 flew non-stop from Paris to Auckland. It was a niche model and sold in small numbers.
